Biography

Elijah Dodson was born about 1804, in Georgia. Elijah is the son of Daniel Dodson and Sarah Peters.

Elijah appears on the property tax digest for 1826, in District Henry C. Morgan, District No. 548, Fayette Co., Georgia.

Elijah married in Fayette Co., Georgia, Mahala C. Moore, on the 24th of February, 1830.

Elijah appears in the 1830 Federal census in Fayette Co., Georgia. Elijah's household consisted of: 1 male age 20 to 30 and 1 female age 20 to 30.

Elijah appears in the 1840 Federal census in Fayette Co., Georgia, in Capt. Mathews Dist. Elijah's household consisted of: 1 male under age 5; 1 male age 5 thru 9; 1 male age 30 thru 39; 1 female age 5 thru 9; and 1 female age 30 thru 39.

Elijah appears in the 1850 Federal census in Campbell Co., Georgia. Elijah's household consisted of: Elijah, age 46; Mahala C., age 43; Elizabeth, age 18; Daniel M., age 15; Isaac W., age 11; Nancy J, age 8; Sarah Ann, age 7; William Peter, age 5; James K. P., age 3; and Martha M., age 1.

Elijah appears in the 1860 Federal census in Campbell Co., Georgia. Elihah's household consisted of: Elijah, age 56; Mahala C., age 51; Sarah, age 18; William, age 15; James age 12; and Martha, age 9.

Elijah was too old to serve in the Civil War, but from a claim Elijah filed with the U.S., Southern Claims Commission in 1872, his sympathies lay with the Union. The remarks in the complaint read as follows: "Claimant [Elijah Dodson] was over conscript age. He swears to loyal sympathies and because he kept his sons out of the Army a Rebel Command camped in the Vicinity and forage on claimant for three days and arrested him knocking him down with a gun and handcuffed him and carried him to the barracks in Atlanta and thence to jail on charges of treason. He was released after two months on Habeus Corpus."

The claim includes affidavits from other individuals not related to Elijah who testified to the losses of crops, farm animals and ill treatement that Elijah suffered. Elijah's wife Mahala and his daughter Elizabeth Bachelor were among the individuals who gave affidavits.

In Elijah's affidavit he tells about the physical assault and arrest and the loss of his crops and livestock. Elijah also gives a description of his property as a farm consisting of 265 acres located within 3 miles of Fairburn, GA, consisting of lots 112 & parts of 111 & 121 of District of originally Fayette County. Elijah was awarded $363 for his losses.

Elijah appears in the 1870 Federal census in Campbell Co., Georgia. Elijah's household consisted of: Elijah, age 65; Mahala, age 61; and Martha, age 20.

Elijah's wife Mahala C. Moore Dodson, died sometime after the 1870 census and before the 1880 census.

Elijah appears in the 1880 Federal in Campbell Co., Georgia. Elijah is listed as a widower. Elijah's household consisted of: Elijah, age 76; and Martha M., age 30.

Elijah died sometime after the 1880 census, as he does not appear in the 1900. The exact date of his death and place of burial is not currently known.
