Norman was the son of Howard Dodson and Bessie Gifford.
Norman entered the family brewing business of Dodson & Co, Nelson.
In 1916, he enlisted during WWI - Serial no 25/537 as a Rifleman with the NZ Rifle Brigade, 3rd Battalion, C Company, embarking 5 February 1916 to Suez, Eygpt . His battalion later made their way on to France. In October 1916, Norman was wounded and put onto a hospital ship sailing to England. He saw service overseas for just over a year but due to wounds received was deemed medically unfit for duty and returned to New Zealand on the ship 'aunganui' in march 1917.
Postwar, he worked for the Government Housing Department in Wellington.
In 1939, aged 53, Norman enlisted with the National Military Reserve Guard.
Norman passed away in 1945 age 59. Cremation Wellington.
