Biography

Rosannah (Rhoda) Dodson was the daughter of Thomas Dodson, Jr. and his wife Elizabeth Rose. She was born at their home in Pittsylvania County, Virginia, in 1744. Called "Rhoda," she was their 9th child (of 10 living children) and 5th daughter.

In 1760, at 16 years old, she married Rev. John Creel, eight years older than she was, from Rappahannock County, Virginia. Her husband John was her first cousin.

Rosannah gave a power of attorney to her son Elijah Creel to represent her in the estate of her deceased husband John Creel. The power of attorney reads as follows: "Know all men by these presents that I Rosanah Creel of the county of Pittsylvania and State of Virginia Administratrix on the Estate of John Creel Deceased, for divers considerations and good causes me hereunto moving have made ordained constitute and appointed, and by these presents do make ordain constitute and appoint my trusty friend Elijah Creel a Legatee of the said Creel Deceased in the said county, my true and Lawful Attorney for me, in my name, and to my use to ask demand recover or receive of any Debtor to the said Estate, and to give Receipts for the same, and also to settle with the Legatees of the said Creel deceased according to the agreement made and confirmed among the said Legatees and take their Receipts, giving and by these presents granting to my said Attorney my sole and full power and authority to to take pursue and follow such legal courses for the recovery receiving and obtaining of the same as I myself might or could do were I personally present and upon the Receipt of the same acquittances and other sufficient discharges, for me and in my name to make sign seal and deliver and further to do perform and execute for me and in my name all and singular thing or things which shall or may be necessary touching or concerning the premises as fully thoroughly and entirely as I the said Rosanah Creel in my own person ought or could do in and aobut the same ratifying allowing and confirming whatsoever my said Attorney shall Lawfully do, or cause to be done in and about the execution of the premises by virtue of these presents. In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this fifteenth day of June in the year of Lord Christ one thousand eight hundred and three, and twenty seventh year of the Commonwealth. At a Court held for Pittsylvania county the 20th day of June 1803 The within Letter of Attorney from Rosannah Creel to Elijah Creel was presented in Court and proven by the oaths of the three subscribing witnesses, thereto, and by the Court ordered to be recorded."[1]

Children: Thomas, Mary, Alice, Lucinda (Lucy), Micajah, John, William, Elijah, Rhoda, Martha. Rosanna Rhoda (Dodson) Creel died at home in Pittsylvania County, Virginia, USA, in 1801.
