Biography

Eleanor Dodson was born about 1749, possibly in Richmond County, Virginia. Eleanor was the daughter of Elisha Dodson and Sarah Everett.

Eleanor married John Stamps on the 16th December 1765 in Fauquier county, Virginia.[1]

Eleanor's husband John Stamps died in Pittsylvania County, Virginia between the 2nd of November and before the 21st of December, 1812. John Stamps made his last will and testament on the 2nd November 1812 in Pittsylvania County, Virginia. John Stamps will was proved "At a court held for Pittsylvania County the 21st of December 1812. This last will and testament of John Stamps Dec'd was presented in court and proved by the oaths of the three subscribing witnesses thereto, ordered that this same be recorded and on motion of William Stamps one of the Executors herein . . . " [2]

Eleanor signed the 29th of December 1812 marriage record for her daughter Lydia Stamps to Spiers Walters.[3]

Eleanor died before 10 Jul 1816 in Pittsylvania County, Virginia, as court records state an inventory of Eleanor's estate was done after she died: "In compliance to order of the Worshipful Court of Pittsylvania June Term to us directed have conveyed at the sole dwelling house of Leannah Stamps, dec'd on the 10th day of July 1816 and appraised the said estate as follows, to wit

1 cows 1 calf $ 10.00, 1 little steer 4.00, 1 oven .75, 1 all rach flat iron and tribbit 2.00, 1 frying pan 1 skillet 1.50, 3 potts 2 pare of hooks and 1 skillet 7.00, a parsel of water vessels 1.25, 1 cupboard 12.00, 1 table 1.50, 1 chist 2.50. [4]

Notes

Eleanor Stamps was not mentioned in the deed of gift from her father Elisha to his children in 1791. Perhaps as eldest she had already received her share. The Dodson Family book assumed she had died but she was very much alive. She was named as a daughter of Elisha & Sarah also in Rev. Elias Dodson's manuscript and since she was his maternal grandmother, that seems credible. Her name is recorded as Leannah in some records, including the will of John Stamps, and some believe they may be two different ladies.

A note in the Dodson book, p.21, referring to the children of Joshua Dodson [a brother of Eleanor's father Elisha] shows a possible daughter named Eleanor. A grandson of Joshua, George Washington Dodson, said that his father had a sister, name not remembered, who married a Stamps. That would seem to indicate Eleanor was a daughter of Joshua, not Elisha. Of course given the numbers of Stamps and Dodsons, this could have been a different person altogether. This grandson could also have been mistaken about the relationship. He also said that one of his father's sisters had married a Creel. The Dodson lady that married a Creel was Alice who married William Creel and Alice was a sister to Joshua and Elisha and would have been in the grandfather's generation not the father's.
