Biography

William E. Dodson was born about our before 1773, in Pittsylvania county, Virginia. William's year of birth is based on his being at least 21 years of age when he married Tabitha Hendrick in 1794. William is the son of Elisha Dodson Sr. and Virginia Sarah Everett.[1]

William's father, Elisha Dodson, deeded certain property to his children. The deed reads in part as follows: "This Indenture, made this 27th day of April in the year of our Lord Christ one thousand seven hundred and ninety one Between, Elisha Dodson of the county of Pittsylvania of the one part and Presley Dodson, William Dodson, Margaret the wife of Rawley Dodson Lyda the wife of John Waller, Ruth the wife of Jesse Dodson, Sarah the wife of Thomas Dodson, Jemimah the wife of Joshua Hardey and Elisha Dodson Jr. of the county aforesaid of the other part, Witnesseth that the said Elisha Dodson as well and in consideration of the natural love and affection which he hath and doth bear to his said children as also the further consideration of five shillings to him in hand paid at or before the ensealing and delivery of these presents, the ? whereof is hereby acknowledged and for the better maintenance and ? of his said children hath given granted confirmed and firmly made over and by these presents doth give grant confirm and firmly make over unto the said Presley Dodson, William Dodson, Margaret Dodson, Lydda Waller, Ruth Dodson, Sarah Dodson, Sarah Dodson, Jemimah Hardey and Elisha Dodson Jr. (that is to say) the land whereon he now lives, containing three hundred acres on Toby Creek in the county aforesaid, unto his said sons, Presley & William to be divided between them according to the meanders of the said creek Presley the north side & William the South, including to William four acres on the north side, according to the known antein land reputed bounds thereof and all houses, outhouses woods, underwoods, waters, . . . and also the following slaves whose names are Simon, Harvey, Sam, Winney, Milley, Lettey, Cusia, Suckey, Aggy and Eve, and all his moveable estate of what kind or quality . . .as to the said Negroe Harvey who is to be delivered to the said John Waller, and with him to remain until a debt is paid which the said Elisha Dodson is now owing . . ."[2]

William married his first wife Tabitha Hendrick on 19 July 1794 in Pittsylvania County, Virginia.[3]

William purchased from his brother, Presley Dodson, the land Presley had received from their late father, Elisha Dodson. The deed reads as follows: "This Indenture made this seventeenth day of October Eighteen [Hundred] - Between Presley Dodson of the county of Halifax of the one part and William Dodson of the county of Pittsylvania of the other part Witnesseth that the said Presley Dodson for and in consideration of the full and just sum of one hundred and fifty pounds Virginia Currrency to him in hand paid by the said William Dodson for the receipt thereof the said Presley have granted bargained and sold to the said William Dodson one certain tract or parcel of land lying and being in the county of Pittsylvania and state of Virginia on the North side of Tobies Creek containing two hundred acres, be the same more or less, and bounded as followeth Beginning at a corner on Tobies Creek with Charles Walls line then his line to Beverley Barksdales line, thence Barksdales line to the lands of John Caldwell dec'd thence that line to said Tobies Creek, thence down the said Creek as it meanders to the beginning, it being the land that Elisha Dodson dec'd gave to the said Presley Dodson and the said Presley Dodson doth for himself his heirs &c warrant and defend the rite and title of the above sold land and premises with all the appurtenances thereto belonging unto him the said William Dodson his heirs &c for ever free from the lawfull claim or claims of all and every other person or persons whatsoever In Witness whereof I hereto set my hand and seal the day & date above written [signed] Presley Dodson Witnessed by Archilles Whitlock, Wm Barksdale, Fleming Bates, Champnces Terry At a Court held for Pittsylvania county October the 20th 1800 This Indenture was presented in court and proved by the oaths of three of the witnesses there to to be the act and deed of the within named Presley Dodson. Ordered that the same be recorded Teste Will Tunstall C/LC"[4]

William married the widow, Margaret Walters Russell as his second wife.

William died intestate in 1821 in Pittsylvania County, Virginia. William was buried in the cemetery on his property, described as: ". . . the deceased is buried a square of ground designated by four corner stones & by Lumbardy poplars planted around the square. . ."[5]

William's land was sold by court order. The deed for the sale reads as follows: "This Indenture made this 4th day of January 1823 Between William H. Shelton, Daniel Verser & George Moore of the one part and John Dodson of the other part Witnesseth that whereas at a Court for Pittsylvania county November 1822 in a suit then and there Between Hugh H. Dodson & other Plffs against John Dodson & Polly his wife and Margarett Dodson Defendants It was ordered and decreed that William H. Shelton Daniel Verser George Moore Ayers Hodnett & George Moore or any three of them who was appointed commissioners for the purpose after duly advertising the time & place of sale should sell the land whereof William E. Dodson died said being a tract of fifty four acres lying on the waters of Tobies Creek to the highest bidder on a credit of one and two years taking of the purchaser bond with security ? and whereas after duly advertising the time and place of sale the above named William H. Shelton Daniel Verser & George Moore commissioners as aforesaid proceed on the premises to sell the said land to the highest bidder on the terms aforesaid and the said John Dodson became the last and highest bidder consequently the purchaser at the price of one hundred & eighty four dollars for which he hath executed his bond at one & two years with Robert Walters his security. In consideration whereof the said William H. Shelton, Daniel Verser & George Moore doth hereby grant bargain sell & release to the said John Dodson his heirs or assigns forever the aforesaid tract of land with the appurtenances reserving however the Grave Yard where the deceased is buried a square of ground designated by four corner stones & by Lumbardy poplars planted around the square. The residue and the appertenances to him the said John Dodson his heirs & assigns forever to have & to hold clear of the claims of ourselves & our heirs & assigns with the right which the proceedings in this case guarranted In testimony whereof we set our hands & seals [signed] William H. Shelton, Danl Verser, George Moore At a court held for Pittsylvania county on the 18th day of August 1823 this Indenture from William H. Shelton Daniel Verser and George Moore commissioners &c to John Dodson was presented in court and acknowledged by all the parties ordered to be recorded Teste, Will Tunstall CPC"[5]

Children of William E. Dodson and Tabitha Hendrick were: Hugh H. Dodson, Elisha Dodson, William E. Dodson, Jr., Humpherey Dodson, Alexander Dodson, Artamesia Dodson Slayton, and Mary Dodson Tate.
