Biography

Lydia Dodson was born the 26th February 1784, in Halifax county, Virginia. Lydia was the daughter of Caleb Dodson and Elizabeth Petty

Lydia married Spencer Vaughan sometime before 1832. No marriage record has been located.

Lydia is named as a daughter of Caleb Dodson in his will with her married name of Vaughn as follows: "In the name of God Amen I Caleb Dodson Senr of the county of Halifax and state of Virginia . . . Item 6th I lend unto my daughter Lydia Vaughan, the tract of land whereon she now resides together with a small piece begining at a post oak and taking in what is generally called Jotts old field the above tract of land I give to be equally divided between her two children at her death.. . . Given under my hand and seal this 23th day of May 1832 [signed] Caleb Dodson Witness Alexr Carter, John C. Eldridge, Richard Eldridge At a court held for Halifax county the 23rd day of January 1837 the within written last will and testament of Caleb Dodson dec'd was exhibited in court and proved by the oaths of two witnesses, thereunto subscribed and ordered to be recorded whereupon on the motion of Elijah Dodson one of the Executors therein named who made oath thereto according to law and together with Epheraim Ferrell and Isaac Durham his securities entered into and acknowledge a bond in the penally of $6000 conditioned according to law certificate is granted him for obtaining probate of said will in due form Teste Wm Holt CLK"[1]

Lydia appears in the 1850 Federal census in Pittsylvania County, Virginia in the household of her husband, Spencer Vaughan.[2] Spencer's household appeared as follows:
