Biography

Amariah Dodson was born in November 24th, 1822 in Huntingdon (also spelled Huntington) Valley, Luzerne, Pennsylvania. His parents were Richard Dodson 1793-1845 and Hannah Harriet Watson 1798-1878.^[1] The Territory of Iowa was created and opened to settlement in 1838, Richard Dodson moved his family to Van Buren County on the southern border with Missouri. In the winter of 1842 he married Ann Pell^[2], daughter of John and Sarah Pell, who lived on a neighboring farm.^[3] Ann and her parents were born in England^[4]. They had three children, Harriet, John and Philander. In 1846 Ann and their son John died, by that time Amariah's father had died in 1845, a brother, Jackson, had died in 1843, another brother, Stiles also died in 1846. Amariah was remarried in 1850 to Eliza Jane George^[5] who had come as a young girl from Stawtown, Indiana^[6] to Iowa. When the US Census was taken in 1850^[7], Amariah and his young wife were living with six year old Harriet and farming in Vernon Township. Their young son, Philander, was living with John Beesicker and his wife Alice in Keosauqua, the seat of Van Buren County^[8]. The census shows that Alice was also born in England, and is likely a sister of his mother, Ann. Later that year, Amariah and Eliza had their first child, a son they named Byron. In the next twelve years they had another son, James, and four girls, Clarissa, Mary, Amelia, and Alvira. Then in 1862 there was a gold rush, Amariah and Eliza took a team of oxen into the Rocky Mountains and remained for three years^[9]. During their time in Colorado they had another daughter, Belle, then they returned home. About 1868 they moved just over the border into Missouri and farmed in Scotland county^[10], where they had two more daughters, Emma and Florence. In about 1872 the family moved to Labette county, Kansas. Their son, James, married Clarissa Peak, a girl from Labette county, in the fall of 1872^[11]. When the 1880 Census^[12] was taken, Amariah and Eliza with five daughters and a one year old son, Oscar, were living and farming next to their son James and his wife and a young son and daughter. Some time between 1895 and 1900, Amariah and Eliza moved to Montana Township with only their youngest son, Oscar. Their neighbors were their own children, Sarah with her husband Dan Merry, Clarissa with her husband Pliney Peak, Sabina with her husband Sawtell^[13].

Possible mother of Amariah Dodson, and wife of Richard Dodson: Hannah Harriet Watson 1798-1878 I have seen records that show his middle name is 'Watson' and his first daughter's name is 'Harriet'.
