Biography

Mary was named in the will of her brother, Greenham Dodson, as Mary Shumate who is to receive "15 pounds curr." Mary was the wife of Bailey Shumate brother of Daniel Shumate who was one of the Executors of Greenham Dodson's will.[1]

Slaves

Mary (aka Molly) became an enslaver when her father Abraham Dodson willed her an enslaved female named Nell, in his 1769 will. In legal terms, this directive meant that the legal owner of Nell was Molly's husband Bailey Shumate.
