Biography

Mahala Dodson was born the 17th November 1796 in Abbeville county, South Carolina. Mahala was the daughter of Enoch Dodson and Elizabeth Unknown.[1]

Mahala is named in the will of her father Enoch Dodson as follows: ". . . to be equally divided between my beloved children viz: Nancy Barmore, Wm Dodson, Jas. Dodson, Lucy Barmore, Malinda Agnew, Polly Dodson & Mahaley Dodson and I do nominate and appoint as Executors to this my last will & testament my wife Elizabeth my son Wm Dodson & Samuel Agnew. Signed with my own hand this twenty third day of April in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and eleven . . ."[2]

Mahala married John Lindsey Ellis about 1819. John L. Ellis was the son of Robert Ellis Sr[3] and Margaret Gray[4]

Mahala appears in the 1850 Federal census in Abbeville county, South Carolina in the household of her husband, John L. Ellis. John's household appears as follows: John L. Ellis age 56, occupation, farmer; Mahala Ellis age 54; Mahala A. Ellis age 23; Melinda E. Ellis age 17; John R. Ellis age 14; and Laura Miller age 7.[5]

Mahala died the 23rd of June 1855 in Abbeville county, South Carolina. Mahala was buried in the Lindsay cemetery, Abbeville county, South Carolina. [6]
