Due to her death occurring before death certificates were kept and the absence of a christening record there is no way to know Hannah Dohrendorf's precise birth date. When she died in March of 1890 the city of St. Louis was recording deaths and Hannah's record states that she died at the age of 30 of "encephalitis following chronic catarral changes" which is a brain infection most likely preceded or brought on by a viral infection. I believe that Hannah and all her siblings were born in St. Louis, which is where her parents were married in 1854. The 1870 federal census lists Missouri as the birthplace for all the Dohrendorf children. Beyond these scant facts very little is know about the life of Hannah Dohrendorf Plowman.
Their mother's death displaced Hannah's three small children, Al, Bob and May from their home. Hannah's widower, George Plowman, moved the children to the St. Louis Protestant Orphan's Home in Webster Groves, Missouri, until he was able to remarry 1 1/2 years later. The trauma of their mother's early death and the move to an orphanage seems to have haunted the Plowman children for the rest of their lives.
Hannah is buried with her first child, George Plowman, who died when he was a year and a half old.
