Austin Franklin Freel enlisted in the U.S. Army at St. Louis, Missouri as a private in Company A, 35th Infantry Regiment Missouri. He was 28 years old, 5'8" tall; with a sandy complexion; gray eyes and light hair. He was a farmer from Hamilton County, Iowa.
Austin Franklin Freel died less than 5 months later, on January 9, 1863. He was dead at Jefferson Barracks General Hospital. He was buried in Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery, 2900 Sheridan Road St. Louis , MO 63125, Section 26 Site 5772.

Amanda M. Donahoo died soon after this marriage, between February, 1866 and July, 1867, when William W. Doggett married Barbary Ellen Ricket in Marion County, Iowa. Her place of burial is unknown.
