Death of C C Donnelly:
After a lingering illness, Cornelius Donnelly of 79 South Main St passed away on Saturday afternoon loved and respected by all who made his acquaintance. Forty-four years of residence and business activity had brought Mr. Donnelly into a position of prominence and importance in the life of this community. The deceased was a native of Rumerfield, Bradford County, PA where he was born Nov 28, 1840, being the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. James Donelly. In 1869 he moved to this city and began his long business career here.
Mr. Donnelly entered into the commercial life of Pittston when this city was enjoying a new lease of activity following the close of the Civil War.He established his undertaking and furniture business in the store room at 73 South Main the site of his present business and residence. Honest endeavor and application won for young Mr. Donnelly an extensive business and an important position in this city;s development. He waas identified with many movements which had for then and the upbuilding of commercial Pittston.
Cornelius Donnelly was known to practically all Pittston's residents and was admired and respected by them. He was a thoroughly substantial, quiet and eminently worthy citizen, devoting his attention to his home life and his business interests. He was never identified with political activities but manifested a useful interest in other varied movements which had to do with the development of the town.Had Pittston a Founder's Club, he would be entitled to a postition of prominence therein.
He was everyman's friend in the sense which idealizes the term 'neighbor'. His passing with be marked by eearnest and deepfelt sorrow and with sympathy for his surviving family.
The large family of Mr. Donnelly were his chief interest. All are prominently known and esteemed in their home town and their present places of residence. His eleven children follow: John J Donnelly of Wilkes Barre; attorney Michael M Donnely of this city; George P Donnelly of Philadelphia; Rev. Francis P Donnelly SJ of Poughkeepsie; Miss Nora Donnelly at home; Mrs. H J Lenehan of this city; Charles F Donnelly of West Pittston; Sister Mary Francis of Convent Station, NJ; the misses Agnes, Regina and Joseph at home.
Two brothers: Daniel of Binghamton, NY and Patrick of Chicago and one sister, Mrs. Mary Hastings of Chicago also survive.
Mr. Donnelly was a member of the Knights of Columbus and CMBA. The funeral will take place tomorrow morning with a solemn requiem mass in St. John's RC church with Rev. Francis P Donnelly SJ celebrant. Friends will kindly omit flowers.
