John was living in Minnesota when his younger brother was born.[1]He had taken over his father's farm in Wellington Township, Renville County, Minnesota, when he was 26.[2]
Ten years later, he was working as a land salesman in Ray, North Dakota.[3] Ten years later, his mother Margaret, born in Ireland, and his brother Charlie and nephew John Ruddy, born in Minnesota,[4] had joined him on his farm in North Dakota.[5]
John married Alice McGowan in Benson, Minnesota when he was about 50 years old.[6]They returned to John's farm in Ray, North Dakota, after their marriage.[7] By 1930, John and Alice had three children.[8] Another child was born before 1940, and Alice's widowed mother came to live with them.[9]
John died at age 83 in Williams County, North Dakota.[10]
