Biography

Amanda Matilda Doolittle was born in 1839 to Beriah Doolittle and Susan Blair;[citation needed] she died in 1908.

According to Chamblee researcher D'Ann Stoddard, Amanda Matilda Doolittle is listed in the 1860 census of Gonzales County, Texas with Sanford H. Chamblee whom she married in Gonzales, 2 May 1860. Sanford H. Chamblee had children with Susan Masters of DeKalb County, Alabama, and after the marriage with Amanda, Sanford went on to marry Martha C. Bond and live in San Augustine County, Texas where he appears in regional records. The reason for the split with Sanford Chamblee and union with Samuel Stevens is unclear. [citation needed]

She married Sam Stevens in Texas on Feb 7th, 1864.[1]

Children of the marriage:
  1. J. "Texas" Hulen Stevens (1872-1932)[2]

Doolittle Stevens died in Dewitt, Texas in 1908. [citation needed]

This Death Certificate is for Amanda's son, Texas Hulen Stevens (T.H. Stevens) not J.H. Stevens, her son, which occurred in Yoakum, Dewitt Co., TX not Yorktown, TX as is listed and misquoted in the 1850 Census. This is my Grandfather.

The reason for the Amanda Doolittle/Chamblee split was the fact that Chamblee had not divorced Susan Masters and had married Amanda Doolittle illegitimately! My Bible quoting family probably sent him away when this was revealed. i.e. He was still married to another wife. When I started my research (in the 60s) I discovered the ML to Chamblee in Victoria County. No one in the current family had any knowledge of this. (of course they didn't talk about it)
