Name

Name: Cornelius /Doremus[2]

Migration

After living in Middelburg for many years, the family decided to emigrate to America. The date of their departure is not known, neither is the name of the vessel on which they sailed known, nor is the date of their arrival in this country known. Probably they left Middelburg sometime after 7 Sept. 1684, the date Johannes was bapt., and sometime before 11 Apr. 1687, the date Thomas was baptized., son of Cornelis Doremus, of Middelburg, and Jannetje Joris, of Elsland. This is the earliest date of record found here in the church records at Bergen, New Jersey. [3]
Cornelis Doremus was a Planter, and in 1708 he purchased an extensive farm at Wesel [now Paterson], containing one hundred and fifty acres, whereupon he settled his family. In 1711 he purchased a much larger farm on Wesel Mountain, containing approximately three hundred and fifty acres, as previously mentioned. Upon this tract, he settled his son Thomas, while he remained always on his farm at Wesel. Here he d. ca. 1715. No account has been found of the d. of Jannetje (Joris) Doremus, his widow. [3]

Marriage

Property

  • "....In 1711 a purchase was made by eight Acquackanonk farmers of two thousand eight hundred acres. These eight farmers all bore Holland names ; they were Francis Post, John Sip, Harmanus Garretse (now written Garretson), Thomas Jurianee (now called Van Riper), Christopher Stynmets or Steinmetts, Cornelius Doremus, Peter Poulesse, and Hessel Pieterse, now modernized into Peterson. The land thus purchased extended from the Great Falls ”at Paterson, up the Passaic to Peckman’s River, and over to the summit of Garret Mountain, and included a large part of Little Falls, and was afterward divided into tracts ten chains wide passing from river to mountain....."[6][7][6][8]

  • "....in 1708 Cornelis Doremus had acquired the extensive farm at Wesel, lying on the north side of the Wesel drift way (now widened and straightened, and known as Crooks avenue), and extending from the river to the mountain, having a width of about ten chains, and containing about one hundred and fifty acres. This is now in the extreme southeastern and southern section of the city of Paterson. Cedar Lawn cemetery now covers part of the farm; Lake View a larger portion, and South Paterson still another part...."[7][6][8]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Cornelius by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Cornelius:

Can someone explain sources 1 and 10 to me? Where do they come from and how can I find them? Source 9 is nice but where is the source URL or other means for me to find it? There are redundancies in the profile, especially with the children which should be eliminated and/or combined. Say okay and I can do that little matter.

I would be in favor of cleaning up this record so the only sources are actual records or historical sources like Nelson and Scott, and remove references to previous Ancestry and other trees. It appears that Astrid (Schellenberger) Spaargaren has looked diligently for baptisms of the children born in Middelburg but with no success. Nelson mentions a "family tradition that a third son died on the voyage and was buried at sea" but only reports the first two, Cornelis and Johannes, as having been born in Middelburg. I would be in favor of only showing children 4-9 in the first chart of children, and leaving off numbers 1-3 unless the baptismal dates for them can be sourced. And removing the entire second presentation of children, which has some suspicious "extras" and is also in very confusing order.

Thank you, Sharon, for your comments. I agree with your findings. If There are no other commentors in the next couple of days, I will go ahead and clean it up.

Edited/Added at the source of the image of the marriage note of Cornelis and Janneke I posted to the profile, the date of posting the image of the marriage note. As I only added a link to my name but forgot to add the date. This way researchers after me can find back when, who and where the source was found.

Not my invention but custom at the Cape of Good Hope Project Profiles I learned a few weeks ago and I think it is a very good thing to do on important, project protected and/or profiles so many work on.

All(most all) churchbooks of Middelburg are destroyed during WWII. I searched fiches of the Isle of Walcheren on Doremus, Oremus but so far nothing. Searched baptisms Breskens 1654 till 1656 no results so far.
D'Oremus-223 and Doremus-6 appear to represent the same person because: I apologize for starting a new profile, when there was already one. I am new to WikiTree.

Doremus-6 is my 8th great grandfather through his son Hendrick Cornelisz.

Doremus-76 and Doremus-6 appear to represent the same person because:

Hi Stan, These can be merged now , I have added the unverified parents template at his (Doremus-6 the lowest number and PPP t) profile already to make clear the Hendrick maybe isn't and just was assumed to be his father, so with that template added, which also says we need research and sources to prove he is or really is not his father , we can safely merge them now Thanks and Greets , Bea

We can do the same for the parents of his wife if you think this is needed of course (they need to be merged first )

We can do the same for his wife, if you think this is needed (her parents are also not really proven I guess ?) But anyway, her parents need to be merged first . The Cornelis duplicates can be merged now already, no further conflicts :)

His mother was Unknown and the father of his wife was Joris Mathysen so I'll connect the now mother Joris Mathyssen to his wife as her father which he was supposed to be ..

Hi Paul,

I'm trying to sort this family out , so I added some info and organized the profile, gave it for now Dutch Roots PPP (correct name and low number) , so if the other one can be merged he will be merged into this one . Greets , Bea

Doremus-76 and Doremus-6 are not ready to be merged because: "Son of Hendrick Doremus and Joris Matthyssen"

Husband of Janneke Joris Van Esland — married [date unknown] [location unknown] Husband of Jannetje Joris Matthysen — married May 12, 1675 in Arnemuyden, Laan, Hollandmap Father of Thomas Doremus Died February 8, 1714 in Paterson, Passaic, New Jerseymap

Currently, my research does not have proofing for the listed information in Doremus (6). My understanding is that Hendrick Doremus and Joris Matthyssen relationships are "assumed". They were witnesses of the baptism at church in Middleburg, Holland of Cornelis Cornelise Doremus who was the son of Cornelis Doremus (76) and was the husband of Rachel Pieterse.

I will research the sourced tree listed to validate if both can be merged in the future.
