Biography

Origin

Azariah Doss was born c. 1754 near Pigg River, Halifax County, Virginia.[1] He was the son of Zachariah Doss and Elizabeth Atkinson.[1] Joel, a brother and the husband of Hannah (Ayres) Doss The parents of Azariah may be uncertain, as Murphy in Descendants of Azariah Doss and His Wife, Lydia (Ayres) Doss writes:

probable brothers were Zaccheus (deeds 1778, 1779-wife Mary in the second), Stephen (deeds, 1782, 1783), James (survey, 1780), and Edward (deed, 1794-wife Mary) and several others. One of them may have been the father of the others.[1]

Family

Azariah married c. 1778 (based on the birth of eldest child in 1779) in Bedford County, Virginia to Lydia Ayres.[1] Lydia's sister, Hannah married to Joel, the brother of Azariah.

Children:[1]

  1. Elizabeth, the oldest

It is probable that Azariah was the father of the oldest child, daughter Elizabeth. He is listed as the father in the records of several of the children's marriages, but as surety on Elizabeth's.[1]

Bedford County, Virginia: Fights and Fires

Azariah Dodd appears on several property records filed in these years in Bedford County: 1783, 1800, 1803, 1804, 1808, 1820.[1] Many of the Doss families which were living in Bedford County appear to have moved before Azariah and his brother Joel left, sometime after 1810.[1]

Azariah was involved in numerous altercations in Bedford County, Virginia, and his name appears frequently in court records.[2] Madonna (Doss) McCarthy, a family researcher, calls Azariah "a fighting fool." He was remanded for trial on 9 March 1809, charged with feloniously burning John Hurt's tobacco house down [Bk 15, p 48].[2]

He served in North Carolina, and in South Carolina he fought in the battle at Cowpens, Eutaw Springs, and at the Surrender of Cornwallis at Yorktown in Virginia, 17 Oct 1781.[1] When he was captured by the British, his wife not only freed him, but took two enemy prisoners in return.[1]

Lydia Ann Hynes Letter

"My father Izariah Doss a native of Virginia, served as a soldier enlisted in the Army of Gen. Washington, was promoted to a captaincy of a Whig company, to oppose the Tories in North Carolina. Was subsequently engaged in South Carolina, against the British, at the Cowpens, Camden, Eutaw Springs and elsewhere, and at the capture of Cornwallis at Yorktown in Virginia. On his arrival at Elizabethtown, Kentucky, he made proposals to Cad. Churchwell and Mr. Percival, to draw his pension, but never received anything to the knowledge of my father in family. My father died in Monroe County near Tomkinsville, Kentucky, in January 1825, and my mother in Russellville, Ky, in 1831. Neither of them ever applied for or received a pension.
"So far as my knowledge extends, my brother George Washington Doss and myself are the only surviving representatives of my fathers family.
Lydia Ann Hynes.
"P.S. This letter is intended to be sent to Mount Vernon, another of the same date and purport to be placed in the Post Office, Blairsville, Posey County, Indiana to either of which places ... will be very acceptable."
Sent to Washington, D.C. from Posey Co IN, dated December 16, 1849.[3]
