Jonathan C. Doss was born in 1801 in Buckingham, Virginia, United States. Records indicate that he is the son of Stewart (also spelled Stuart) Doss and Mary (Polly) Flowers.
Jonathan married Priscilla Thweatt (born in 1801 in Halifax, Virginia; daughter of William Thweatt and Sarah (Gilliam) Thweatt) in , Smith, Tennessee.
Jonathan is listed in DeKalb County, Tennessee with his wife on the 1840 Census[1] and the 1850 Census[2] with six children in their residence. Records indicate that he was a slave owner.[3]
Many believe that Jonathan died in 1853 in DeKalb, Tennessee, at the age of 51. However, he is listed as being alive in the will of his father, Stewart Doss; that is dated February 6, 1855 in Smith, Henderson County, Tennessee in which he is listed as an executor of his father's estate along with Mr. Francis Dowell (the husband of Jonathan's sister - Caroline). With that being said, by the second day of April of 1855 both: Stewart Doss and Jonathan C. Doss are reported by Mr. Dowell as being deceased.[4]
