Biography

Scottish flag
Janet Douglas was born in Scotland.

Disputed parents

Janet Douglas is said to be the illegitimate daughter of Archibald Douglas, 6th Earl of Angus, with a daughter of Stewart of Traquair, "to whom he was contracted before his marriage to Margaret Tudor".[1] However Archibald Douglas, was married to Margaret Tudor on 6 August 1514 after his first wife, Margaret or Mary Hepburn died in 1513,[2] which would seem to leave little time for him to be contracted to anyone else.

This also would also mean that Janet Douglas would have had to be born in 1514 or 1515, and from her husband's birth date and their possible marriage date, their would be an expectation that she would have been born later than that, more likely in the period 1525-1530. If she is the daughter of Archibald Douglas, then perhaps she was born after his divorce from Margaret Tudor?

Marriage and children

She married before 8 August 1546, Patrick Ruthven, 3rd Lord Ruthven. He was born about 1520, the eldest son, of William Ruthven, 2nd Lord Ruthven, and his wife, Jonet Haliburton.[3]

It's not clear whether all of Patrick Ruthven's children were with his first wife Janet Douglas but it would appear that most of them were and they are all listed here.[4]

  1. Patrick Ruthven, Master of Ruthven, died before 1565;
  2. William Ruthven, succeeded his father as 4th Lord Ruthven;
  3. George Ruthven, Precentor of Dunkeld, killed at Stirling on 4 September 1571 at the same time as the Regent Lennox;
  4. Archibald Ruthven, of Forteviot, a General in the service of Sweden, where he was implicated in a plot to free KIng Erik XIV Vasa;
  5. James, first mentioned 1553, succeeded his brother George as Precentor of Dunkeld, died after 1599;
  6. Alexander Ruthven, a pensioner of the bishopric of Ross in 1586;
  7. Jean Ruthven, married (1) Henry Stewart, 2nd Lord Methven (son of her stepmother), died 3 March 1571; (2) Andrew, 5th Earl of Rothes; she died in September 1591;
  8. Isabell Ruthven, married about 22 August 1570, James, 1st Lord Colvill of Culross.

Janet Douglas, was still living on 16 December 1552, but must have died before 9 April 1557, when her husband had a contract to marry Janet Stewart, Lady Methven.[5] There seems to be no confirmation that Janet Douglas was either born or died in Perth, Perthshire, Scotland.

This lists her mother as Lady Jane, dau of the Earl of Traquair. It is not clear to me who Jane’s parents are? She was an illegitimate dau of the 6th Earl of Angus.

The mother of Janet Douglas, was an unnamed Stewart of Traquhir, but not Agnes Stewart, who was married and possibly beyond the age of child bearing at this time.

Douglas-1116 and Douglas-2783 appear to represent the same person because: Janet Douglas was an illegitimate child of Douglas and an unknown female, the Stewarts were lords of Traquair, ISABEL Stewart is a good guess. The 1509 is a good date, she did marry a Ruthven. same father, same time frame, same location
