Biography

Elizabeth (Douglass) Howard is a member of Clan Douglas.

Elizabeth, daughter of John Douglass and Catherine Heard, was born about 1685 at Charles County, Maryland.[1]

She married William Stevens HOWARD, son of Edmund HOWARD and Margaret DENT, circa 1707 at Charles County, MD.[2][3] Children (surname HOWARD):

  1. Margaret b. bef 1708
  2. Edmund Howard (bef.1712-aft.1745)
  3. poss. Rachael (Howard) Compton (abt.1714-1789)

1708 Deed: 24 Jan 1708, Charles Co., Maryland, USA. 24 Jan 1708 Margaret Howard d/o William & Elizabeth Howard registers cattle mark; formerly that of her mother. Recorded at request of John Maud.

1709 Deed: 24 Jan 1709, Charles Co., Maryland, USA. (18) 24 Jan 1708 Margaret Howard d/o William & Elizabeth Howard registers cattle mark; formerly that of her mother. Recorded at request of John Maud.

A codicil to the will of Edmund HOWARD dated 1 Jan 1713 mentioned his son William Stevens Howard and wife Elizabeth.[4]

Research Notes

This Elizabeth should not be confused with the wife of Thomas Howard (her husband's brother) who was d/o John Douglas and Sarah Bonner and step-daughter of William Harbert (Sarah Bonner's 4th husband).[5]

RESEARCH NEEDED! At first I had her as d/o John Douglass & Bonner; however dates fit better with John & Heard. Also, the will of the elder Douglass did not mention her, on the mentioned four boys. Also, her estimated b.d. is given as 1673, and in some places 1685. Not sure what the books have.

Further investigation needed to determine if she was in fact the mother of Rachel Howard.

Unsubstantiated that her father was John Douglass who died 1677/78. If correct, then she had to be older than William Stevens Howard; but ages are reasonable.

Note: Surname is not Douglass unless from another family than Col. John Douglass who's daughter Elizabeth married his brother Thomas Howard.
