Research Notes

The Clan MacFarlane entry[1] has her conflated with Christian Lindsay[2] in its assignment of two of Ms Lindsay's husbands to Ms Douglas. Oddly, the one husband not assigned to Ms. Douglas was William Douglas (1365-1421), who happens to be the father of Ms Douglas. Also quite odd is the note that Ms. Lindsay was known as 'Christian Douglas' after marrying William and despite her subsequent marriages. Here is a possibly partial list of the conclusions that could be drawn:

  1. Ms Douglas is actually a duplicate of Ms Lindsay and ought to be merged with William as husband not father
  2. Ms Douglas is the daughter of William by the first wife (Marjory Lindsay)
  3. Ms Douglas is the daughter of William by the second wife (Christian Lindsay)
  4. Ms Douglas never existed
  5. Ms Douglas is a duplicate of Elizabeth Douglas, daughter of William Douglas and Christian Lindsay (but without source)

Thanks, Jack, for straightening out this confusing pedigree (Elizabeth vs. Christian) and updating the profiles.

This needs revision. Christian was the last wife of Sir William, she was daughter to Alexander Lindsay earl of Crawford born about 1404. She had a daughter by him, Elizabeth Douglas, about 1420. After Sir William died in 1421 she married early 1423 to David Wemyss of that Ilk and had a son and daughter by him . After David's death she resigned in 1430 lands which she had held in conjunct infeftment with Sir William to his son James who was not named as her son. Assuming he had then reached full age would place his birth before 1409 clearly of an earlier marriage. Thirdly she married James Auchleck and survived him. See Lindsay-2914.
