Frances M. West, 72, Lewiston Frances Mary West died unexpectedly on Saturday, Sept. 19, 2009, after being killed in a head-on collision on Highway 127 in Washington state. She and her husband, Ronald Gary West, both died at the scene. Frances was born July 8, 1937, at Calgary, Alberta, Canada, to Georgina Minty Dow and William Bell Dow, both of Scotland. She attended King George Elementary in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, Canada, and graduated from Western Canada High School in Calgary. She attended Orange Coast College in California the 1970s. She married Don A.W. Bowes on Sept. 29, 1956, at Calgary. They divorced in 1970. She married Harold Eugene Nelson on Jan. 22, 1976. He passed away March 23, 1990. She then married Stanley R. Stegner on July 2, 1998. He passed away July 9, 2003. She and Ronald Gary West were married April 2, 2008. Frances moved from Canada to California in 1962. She lived in Orofino in 1967-68, then moved to Lewiston, where she was an Avon lady in 1968-69. She returned to Orange City, Calif., where she worked a variety of jobs, including at the office of Dr. R. Pange, and ACC Communications. She was owner of Fran’s Square Dance Apparel from 1988 to 2009. She returned to Lewiston in 2002. She attended the Lewiston Church of Christ, was part of a non-denominational Bible-based family dinner program, was queen of the Vivacious Vagabonds chapter of the Red Hat Society, and enjoyed playing bunco. She was involved with Ladies of the Evening, Spooners Spinners and Twin City Twirlers, and volunteered for Habitat for Humanity, RSVP and Lewiston Historical Society. She also belonged to King George Cuties, Good Sams Camping, Ladies of the Elks, Crystal Squares and Church Mice. Frances is survived by her son, Mitchell G. Bowes of Huntington Beach, Calif.; her daughter, Cheryl L. Parham and husband Kenneth Maurice Parham of Lewiston; sisters Marlene A. Peeling of British Columbia, Canada, and Jean J.E. Frizzell of Calgary; granddaughters Kimberly Brooke Bowes, Kasia L. Williams, Stacey Suzanne Sawhill and Kenneth Maurice Parham II; her mother-in-law, Elsie Louise Bowes of Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada; great-grandchildren Tyler James Williams, Brenna Rene Williams and Seth Micheal Williams, Donovan Xavier Sawhill, Malcom Cordell Tucker Dane Patrick Clark; and nieces and nephews Shannon, Doug, David, Beverly, Linda and Barbie. In addition to her husbands, she was preceded in death by her father, William Bell Dow, in 1919; and her mother, Georgina Minty Dow Young in 1996. A memorial service for Fran and Ron West will be at 2 p.m. Oct. 4 at the Lewiston Elks Temple, 3444 Country Club Drive, with Nathan Wolfe of the Church of Christ officiating.
