John was baptised on February 7, 1806 in Greenock, Renfrewshire, Scotland, the son of John Dow and Jessie Campbell.[1]
He married Janet Colquhoun Baird on 24 Nov 1840 at Belltrees, Hunter Valley, New South Wales, Australia, registered at the Church of England, Scone, Colony of New South Wales.

He died on 4 October 1878 at St Kilda, near Melbourne, Colony of Victoria. His Will, dated 18 December 1876, names his wife and six children as beneficiaries. Probate was granted on 31 October 1878 to his son-in-law, John William Crosbie, the surviving Executor.
