Biography

Sarah was born in Peterborough County, Ontario, the daughter of Patrick and Sarah McAuley Dowd. Although her birth year was listed as 1852 on her death record, ^[1] she was likely born in 1850, according to the 1851 Canada West Census (which was actually conducted in 1852). Her father had died before the census was taken and her mother was identifed as a widow. She had one brother, also named Patrick, two years older.^[2]

On the 1861 Canada West Census, Sarah and her mother appear to be living with or near the family of Laughlin Nolan. Ten year old Sarah may have been working for the Nolan family and her mother may have been employed by the Nolans or a neighboring family.^[3]

By 1871, Sarah was clearly working as a servant for the Nolans^[4] and was still working for them ten years later.^[5]

In 1886, Laughlin, having survived the deaths of two wives, married his former employee Sarah Dowd. ^[6]Loughlan's youngest son Thomas Ed was living with them on their farm in 1891.^[7] They were still living on their farm in 1901.^[8]In 1911, Laughlin's grandson, Edward Moher, was living on the farm with them.^[9]

Sarah died at age 67 of pernicious anemia. ^[10]
