Disputed Parents

  • The parents of Isabel Downing are *Unknown* her father was certainly *not* Sir George Downing, 2nd Baronet, of East Hatley. That family has been studied in depth and he had only one children:
  1. Sir George Downing, 3rd Bt
  • Note he definitely did not have a daughter named Isabel who came to Maryland.

Discrepancy

This profile suffers an array of issues, which may never be resolved. Perhaps as more information becomes available some of the discrepancies can be resolved.

Most "early" information is a result of Family Trees reportedly from family papers and bibles relating to Edward Heirs claims. (where thousands of people tried to prove they were descendants) (p.90. 101, 109, 111, 161) (Affidavits, but no Bible References given).

Exact dates and locations Unknown (sources are suspect -

  • There does not appear to be any exact civil or parish records to prove/disprove.
  • Denbigh Wales does have some records supporting birth dates for several individuals - but No Parent information found to connect parents to children; No Bible Sources located; No Will Located)

There is a great deal of conflicting information – Several Source-to-Source discrepancies; co-mingling, Lack of records; conflicting family stories; number of same names, No Middle Names Verified, etc.;

Death

  • Supposedly Elizabeth (Isobell) died 8 Jun 1742 of Yellow Fever along with 3 of her children at Port Savannah, Georgia, and was buried in Wales. [From Medical History of Strange Disease of Georgia’s First Settlers.]
  • Sea Voyages in the 1700's from America to Wales typically lasted seven weeks. Logic would indicate that it is unlikely someone who died in America of Yellow Fever would be "transported for burial".

What's the source for this profile being the daughter of George Downing Bt? According to The Complete Baronetage, vol 3, p. 279 her supposed parents married by licence on 12 July 1683 and her supposed mother, Catharine Cecil died in 1688 and George Downing didn't marry again. See here https://archive.org/stream/completebaroneta03coka#page/278/mode/2up

The Wikipedia article for George Downing, Bt has her listed as a daughter but the only reference for that article, doesn't mention her at all.
