Biography

Edward Doyle was an Irishman who emigrated to America in 1683 and died in Bucks County, PA in 1702/1703

Edward Doyle may have been born about 1670, in Ireland. He emigrated to America in 1683 from Dublin as an indentured servant, landing at Philadelphia. We do not know the terms of his indenture, but he was recorded as owning cattle in Bucks County, PA, in 1684.

Edward married Rebecca Dungan about 1687, and produced at least 3 children. In 1696 Rebecca and Edward Doyle were baptised at Cold Spring in Bucks Co. On June 6, 1696, Clement Dungan deeded 50 acres on the banks of the Delaware River to Edward.

He died 1702/1703 in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. His will dated 16 September 1702 still exists, and bears "the mark of Edward Doyles".

Research Notes

The Findagrave page and A R Justice (1922), cited below, tell us that Edward (or Edmund, or Edmund Edward): " ... emigrated from Ireland in 1683 on the ship 'Lion of Liverpool' as an indentured servant to Joseph Fisher". However, Davis (1905) says that Reverend Thomas Dungan sold his Rhode Island real estate in 1682 and relocated to Bucks County, PA, in 1683, and that Edward and Rebecca (Dungan) Doyle accompanied Rev. Dungan. Edward Doyle can't have migrated to Pennsylvania in 1983 from both Ireland and Rhode Island, while indentured to the Fisher family for the next four years.

Not a primary source, but Williams (1876) seems a reliable report from a primary source: Edward Doyal was in Bucks County in 1684, alongside the family of Rebecca Dungan. This tends to support the notion that the Ed Doyle mentioned in the "Lion of Liverpool" is our Edward. There are several posts online claiming the opposite, but providing evidence. According to one, there is a newer edition of the Justice book that does so. Would be nice to check ...

Justice tells us that Edward and Rebecca were baptised in 1696, but Leach says that happened in 1692. Records of the Penneback Church may clarify this.

I can't find any support for his name being Edmund Edward, other than the A R Justice reference and findagrave, nor for the birth year.
