Biography

Amelia was born about 1775.

Jane married Daniel Tindall on 28 November 1792 in Croydon, Surrey, England.[1]. The couple had 7 children.

  1. Daniel Tindall (1795-1876)
  2. Mary (Tindell) Burcher (1798-1871)
  3. Charles Tindall (abt.1800-1871)
  4. Jane Tindall (1802-)
  5. James Tindall (abt.1804-)
  6. Emma (Tindal) Burrell (1815-1904)
  7. Susannah (Tindall) Williams (1817-1901)

In 1803, her husband, Daniel Tindall was convicted of High Treason for his part in a plot to kill King George III (known as the *Despard Conspiracy*). Initially, he was sentenced to be hung, drawn and quartered but his sentence was commuted to transportation for life. He was transported on the Duke of Portland in 1807. In 1807, families were not generally sent with convicts to Australia. However, to balance the numbers of males and females in the colony this decision was reversed in 1813 allowing the family to be reunited. Jane was among the first 10 convict's wives to be transported to Australia [2]. Jane and her 4 children came free on the Kangaroo. They arrived in Sydney on the 12th of January 1814 after a voyage of seven months and eight days from England [3].[4]

  • Mary Tindall
  • Charles Tindall
  • James Tindall

After Daniel's death in 1827, Jane married Charles Palmer in 1829[5]. The couple did not have any children.

Jane died on 12 Aug 1854 in Liverpool [6].

Jane was mentioned on a memorial in Liverpool Pioneer Memorial Park, Liverpool, Liverpool City, New South Wales, Australia with a death date of 12 August 1854.[7]

Research Notes

Proper Given Names Her name is often given as Amelia Jane on secondary sources such as genealogy websites. However, on most primary source documents (her marriage, immigration and death records as well as the birth records of her children) she uses Jane. As no definitive proof of her birth has been found, to date, thus it is possible she was born Amelia Jane. However, it could be that previous researchers confused another family member possibly Jane Bull?
Last Name at Birth No record of Jane's birth has been found. There is some conflict about her LNAB. On her marriage record transcript, her name is recorded as Davis. Structurally Davis and Doyle are similar could there be a transcription error? Alternatively, has Jane been confused with another family member?

The death record and details cited here are incorrect.

The women who died in 1868 was actually the husband of Daniel Tindall (1795 - 1876). That woman was born Jane Bull in County Cork, Ireland in 1799 to parents James Bull and Ann née Wilson. Her father was a private with the NSW Corp.

Some sources suggest that the wife of Daniel Tindall (abt. 1758 - 1827) was born Jane 'Davis', although this seems to be uncertain. It's not clear here how you came to use 'Doyle'.

After her husband died in 1827, Jane married Charles Palmer (refer NSW BDM marriage reg. no. V1829800 13/1829, of PALMER, CHARLES, and TINDALL, JANE) .

Jane died in 1854 (refer NSW BDM death reg. no. V18542276 41A/1854, of PALMER, JANE, showing, AGE 77).

All the attached sources suggest that Jane's maiden name is Davis. Is there any reason not to change her LNAB from Doyle to Davis?
