Biography

Catherine Doyle, came from Enniscorthy, County Wexford, Ireland prior to 1855, but how she came to come to Illinois is not known--whether it was to marry James whom she had previously known, or she came to visit friends, or what is still a mystery.

According to cousin Genevieve Hebert, Catherine's parents came to this country later, and at least her father died here, but his grave has not yet been located for more details.

Catherine had at least one sister, who came to this country, died in an accident in Chicago, and is buried in the James Morrisey plot also. Her headstone reads: "Julia Doyle Lacey, b. 27 July 1810 at Enniscorthy, Ireland; d. 11 July 1866 in Chicago, Ill."

According to St. Patrick's church records (remaining), James Morrisey & Catherine Doyle were married on the 26th of January 1855 by Rev. B. W. Gorrisk. Witnesses were Michael & Bridget Dorsey. No other data was given in the records.

Genevieve Hebert had in her possession an old Prayerbook of Catherine Doyle Morrisey's which has the inscription on the fly-leaf: "Catherine doyle, Temple Shannon, Enniscorthy, County Wexford, Ireland; Barone of Ballaghkeene." The counties in Ireland are divided into sections called Barones, and according to the maps there are four Barones of Ballaghkeene--East, West, etc., with the West one being the only inland Barone. This prayerbook was given to Gen's niece, Rita Schneidereit, who is also interested in family history and treasures.

1877-8 Joliet City Directory, p. 153, lists a James Morrisey as a car oiler for the Chicago & Alton, R.R., and listed his residence as 74 S. Desplaines St., Joliet. The 1881-2 Joliet Directory gives the address of Catherine Morrisey (widow of James) as the same address, Corner of Allen, and also the daughter Kate and Bridget, so it would appear that this is our James Morrisey's occupation at that time. In the 1884 Directory it indicated that Catherine Morrisey was living at 511 S. Desplaines, as was her son Patrick.

1880 US census Catherine is head of family Joliet, Will, IL - family includes father John DOYLE 80 yrs born in Ireland, son Patrick 22 yrs, James 21 yrs, Bridget 19 yrs, Kate 15 yrs [1]
