In 1830 he was counted on the census in St. Landry Parish, Louisiana, as Thomas Dial, age 36 thru 54, "free colored," with one female, age 36-54, and seven children.[1]
Mary died c.1833. He married the widowed Mary Willis Johnson in 1835.[2]
In 1840 he was counted on the census in St. Landry Parish as Thomas Dyal, age 36-54, "free colored," and listed next to Polly Johnson, age 10-23, "free colored," who is likely his wife's daughter from her first marriage. There is one female, age 36-54, in Thomas' household and one other male, age 10-23.[3]
By 1850 he had moved the family to Rapides Parish. According to that document, he was white and 80 years old when the census was taken. He and Mary had one child still at home with them.[4]
In 1860 he was 90 when he was counted on the census in Rapides Parish. His youngest son and his wife and daughters were living with him and Mary.[5]
He died after 19 June 1860, the date of the census.
