Henry was born in 1888. It is unclear where he born, sources say both Wellsville or Stone Dam, NY.[1][2] His parents were Patrick and Mary Doyle.[2] His original middle name was Rycraft or Rycroft after the priest that had married his parents, but this was later changed to Joseph.[3]
Patrick eventually left the family and Mary and Henry moved to West Seneca, NY where Mary worked at an orphanage. [4] Patrick and Mary may have divorced; Patrick appears to have remarried around 1906.
Sometime between 1900 and 1905 Mary and Henry moved to Hornell, NY.[5]Henry lived in Hornell for the rest of his life.[6][7]
Henry was injured in 1916 when steel flew from a drill press and hit him in the eye.[8] He lost his right eye as a result. The Erie Railroad Company gave him 128 weeks' pay as compensation (at $19 a week for a total of $2,438.[9]
Henry married Delia Fitzstephens on August 26, 1919 in Genesee, Pennsylvania.[10] They had four daughters: Mary Ann (1920), Jean (1921), Virginia (1927), and Thomasine (known as Tommy)(1929).
The family lived in Hornell, New York where Henry worked as a foreman for the Erie Railroad.[2][11]
Henry was struck by a train and killed while crossing railroad tracks on his way home in 1936.[2][12] His daughters were between 7 and 16 years old when he died. An inquest was held on December 7, 1936.[13] He is buried in St. Ann's Cemetery in Hornell.[2]
