James born c1820 County Kildare, Ireland, worked as gardener on large estate in Ireland. Married 12 Jun 1855 in Liverpool to Catherine Mary Nash, leaving soon after for South Australia. While employed as gardener to Samuel Davenport at Beaumont, James won numerous prizes for his onions, leeks, cabbages, trombones, figs, etc. By 1868 he was farming at Corcondo near Hamley Bridge. James died 2 Jan 1899 aged 79 years and was buried in Pinkerton Plains Cemetery with 3 children who predeceased him.
James & Catherine had 10 children – James Benedict (1856-1900), Anne Elizabeth (1857-1882), John Edward (1859-1914), Francis Jeremiah (1862-1896), Patrick William (1864-1899), Hugh Bernard (1866-1932), Catherine Marie (Kate) (1868-1922, married Walsh), Thomas Lawrence (1871-1918), Mary Elizabeth (1873-1953, married Corcoran) and Edward Leo (1875-1942).
