Mary Ann seemed to be a favorite name for females in the Dozier families. We know that Mary Ann was born in Davidson County, TN, and that she was born about 1838.[1]
From this reference we can be assured the Mary Ann Dozier was the daughter of Joseph and Jane Dozier. Further, there are 6 Doziers in Davidson County at that time. Of those that are still there in 1850;
According to research done by Rodney Dozier, Joseph was the son of Peter Dozier and was the father of Mary Ann Dozier , whose mother was Jane Trotilda Cullum.[3] Further a family bible belonging to James Lovell list Mary Ann as the daughter of Jane T. and Joseph Dozier.
The 1840 census of Davidson Co., TN lists Joseph L Dozier with one daughter under 5 which would have been our Mary Ann. [4]
Unfortunately the 1850 census of Davidson Co., TN, doesn't show a listing for Joseph, however we know his was there as he shows up on the agricultural censust for 1850.[5]
Mary Ann married E. P. Gower on 31 Jul 1855 in Davidson Co., TN. Ephriam Simmons was E.P.'s bondsman.[6]
Since the 1860 census of Dyer Couty, TN lists Jo Dozier and Jane living next door to Elisha Porter Gower and Mary Ann, we can feel certain that this is our Mary Ann Dozier.
With the dates we are given, Mary Ann was 17 when she married E.P. Gower in 1855. Her first child, Martha Jane was born 25 August 1856 in Newbern, Dyer County, TN. So Mary Ann and her mother both moved to Dyer County about the same time. This might have been coincident with E.P. Gower's coming of age and getting his inheirtance from his father.
Mary's mother, Jane T. Dozier bought the land from E.P. that had purchased earlier.[7]
Mary had Sarah Catharine about 1860 in Dyer County, and then moved with E. P. to Misenhimer, Illinois to ride out the war, having Virgina Tinnie while there.[8]
Mary Ann is listed as 30 years old in the 1870 census of Dyer County, taken on 12 Jul 1870. Listed with her are Jane, Jennie, and Sallie.[9]
Her last child, and first son, James Elihu was born in Dyer County 12 September 1872. She may have died in childbirth with James, but we have no date for her death or place of burial. She was only 34 by this time. Since E. P. remarried in 1880, she was surely dead by then or perhaps left E.P. and remarried somewhere else.
