Biography

Joseph was born in 1720. According to an unsourced genealogy he married Amy Carmen on 11 January 1753.[1]

He was known to have been involved in various land purchases of land in the Cromelins Tract "situate in the patent of Wawayanda in Orange County," as well as additional property in the precinct of Goshen.[2]

Joseph Drake was a member of the committee of Safety in Orange County, NY. The DAR lists two marriages: 1) Unknown 2) Amy Carman. Son Samuel D married Eunice Carpenter.

He appeared on the census in 1790 at Goshen, Orange Co., New York, as Joseph Drake, with a household of 1 male over 16, 2 males under 16, 2 females, 1 other free person and 4 slaves.[3]

He appeared on the census in 1800 at Goshen, Orange Co., New York, as Joseph Drake, with a household of 1 male over 45, 1 female over 45, 1 other free white person, and 2 slaves.[4]

In his will, written 12 Feb 1807, recorded 15 Aug 1807, he names among his beneficiaries: grandson Joseph Drake Smith, granddaughter Amelia Elmon, daughters Caty Smith, Cozia Arnold, and Betsey Winnings, grandsons John Drake and Daniel Drake, son-in-law Ichabod Winnings.[5]

His will also mentions his grandson, Rear Admiral John Drake Sloat, son of Ruth Drake and John Sloat, who claimed California for the United States in San Francisco in the year 1846.
