Biography

Robert Drury was born before 1456 at Hawstead, Suffolk, the eldest of four sons of Roger Drury and his second wife, Felice Denston.

He was knighted by VII of England after the battle of Blackheath on june 17, 1497. He was Speaker of the House of Commons and Privy Councilor as well as barrister-at-law. His townhouse was in Drury Lane.

His first marriage before 12 September 1482[1] was to Anne Calthorpe, daughter of Sir William Calthorpe. They are the parents of two sons and four daughters:

  2. Sir Robert Drury
  3. Anne Drury
  4. Elizabeth Drury m. Sir Philip Boteler
  5. Bridget Drury m. Sir John Jernegan
  6. Ursula Drury m. Sir Giles Allington

After Anne's death, Drury married Anne Jerningham. It was her fourth marriage, and Drury and Jerningham had no children. After Drury's death, Jerningham married Sir Edmund Walsingham and d. 1558.

On May 1, 1531 Drury made his last will, requesting burial in the chancel of St. Mary's Church beside his first wife, Anne Calthorpe. He died on March 2, 1535 and Robert and Ann are buried under a stone monument at St. Mary's Church. A wooden palisade bears the inscription "Such as ye be, sometimes were we, such as we are, such shall ye be."[2] [3] See Wikipedia for more information (#Wikipedia).
