Biography

Lawrence Knickerbocker DuBois was born October 13, 1820 in Tomkins, County New York, USA.

Lawrence married Lois Jacobs Bonney in 1849 at Fort Winnebago, Columbia County, Wisconsin. The marriage record shows "Lawrence N. Dubois married Lowis Bonney on February 4, 1849 in Columbia, Wisconsin".[1][2]

He and Lois had five of their children born in Wisconsin before moving south to Iowa and then Kansas where their son Hiram was born.

In the 1850 census Lawrence (age 30) was in Fort Winnebago, Columbia, Wisconsin, United States. The Banney[sic]members of the household were Lois' mother and Lois' siblings, including a married sister Loisa and her newborn child. [3]

In the 1860 census they are found in Missouri and for some reason the census taker listed him as William but the ages of he and his wife as well as the names and ages of his children leads one to believe this family is his. [4]

When the Civil War broke out he enlisted into the Union Army in Jones County, Iowa and his family lived there until he was mustered out in 1865. During the Civil War, Lawrence served with the 24th Iowa Infantry Company K as a Private. He was detailed as a teamster in "Davis's Train."

Research Notes

This summary of what I (John Novak) has found on Lawrence K DuBois has been compiled over a number of years of research.

  • It appears that Lawrence was born in the state of New York in 1820.
  • It also appears that he was born in Tompkins County of that state as indicated on an enlistment document in the US Army in 1842. Lawrence DuBoice is on record of having enlisted at Albany, New York and indicated he was born in Tompkins county. He is listed as a deserter on May 5, 1844.[9]
  • He next appears on a marriage document at Fort Winnebago, Columbia County Wisconsin in 1849 with his new wife Lois Jacobs Bonney.
  • Lawrence appears next on a 1850 US Census with his wife Lois and a new daughter Mary who is 6 months old, as well as his mother in law, Susan Bonney and others.
  • He next appears on a 1855 census[10] as William with two sons and his wife and one daughter as William DuBoice. Lois is listed as being foreign born . She was born in Maine very close to New Brunswick, Canada before Maine was admitted to the United States and was still a contested territory. That was a determining factor in establishing that William was actually Lawrence! I suspect he was still hiding his past desertion from the US Army. At that period in time they were living very close to Lois's brother Moses Bonney and who are also listed on the 1855 census which helps identify William as actually being Lawrence.
  • The next time we find Lawrence is in Gentry Missouri listed again as William on the 1860 Census with his identifiable family Lois, his wife and known children, Mary, George, Adelbert, Medora and Hiram.
  • At the beginning of the Civil War he enlisted in the US Army as Lawrence K Dubois in the 24th Iowa Infantry and served as a Teamster until he was mustered out in 1865. He then returned to Iowa and is listed on the 1870 Census as Lawrence DuBois with his family. By then his Daughter Mary had married Joseph C Parker. In 1874 he left Iowa for Kansas.
  • In 1875 he is found with his family at Solomon Township, Lenora, Norton, Kansas where he took up a homestead claim. His daughter Medora had by then just married Willis Hall Hendricks who is also listed on that census.
  • In 1880 He is found at Twin Mound, Norton County Kansas with his wife and youngest son Hiram. He later proves up on a claim in that area where he lived until his death.
