Head of Powder Firm Dies of Pneumonia
Eugene DuPont Dies After a Week's Illness - Funeral Will Take Place on Friday

Eugene DuPont, president of the great powder manufacturing firm of E. I. DuPont de Nemours & Co., died in his home in Christiana hundred, near Wilmington, at 5:45 o'clock last evening. His death was due to pneumonia.
Mr. DuPont was taken ill about a week ago, since which time Dr. William R. Bullock, of this city, and Dr. Hobart Hare, of Philadelphia, have been in constant attendance. Both lungs became involved on Monday and after that his death was hourly expected. He was the son of the late Alexis I. DuPont and was 61 years old. He is survived by a widow, two sons and three daughters.
Mrs. DuPont was the daughter of the late Charles I. DuPont. The children are Mrs. Anne R. Peyton, who lives in California; Miss Julia DuPont, Miss Amy DuPont, Alexis I. DuPont and Eugene DuPont.
Funeral services will be conducted in his late home on Friday afternoon, at 3:30 o'clock.
Wilmington is not more famous in any respect than for the DuPont Powder mills. Eleuthere Irene DuPont was the founder of the great works distinguished as the Brandywine Powder Works. He was a native of France, and came to the United States in the fall of 1799, landing at Rhode Island, on January 1, 1800. He noticed the poor quality of gunpowder made in this country and having a knowledge of its manufacture, he came to Delaware and established a plant on the Brandywine creek about four miles above this city. At the time of his death, in 1834, the establishment was the largest of the kind in the country. It now is the largest of the kind in the world.
There have been four heads of the firm since its inception. The second was Alfred DuPont, who died in 1850, and who was succeeded by General Henry DuPont. His death took place in 1889, and he was succeeded in that year by Eugene DuPont, he being president of the company just thirteen years.
