Susanna Elizabeth du Toit appears in listings of deceased people of the Cape Colony^[3]. Though the real probate record would be better, the listing contains some important hard information:

This contradicts current information: it is not district Swellendam, and her husband does not live till 1840, but predeceased her.

Slave Owner

Susanna Elisabeth du Toit seems to have been the widow of Hendrik Christoffel de Wet when she registered his and her slaves with the 1816 Slave Register in the District of Tulbagh. A copy was originally made of Ledger W, so there are two copies of Folio 21^[5], registering the slaves of "widow of the late Hendrik Christoffel de Wet, born Susanna Elizabeth du Toit".

In the slave registers, one sometimes see that the name of a widow was added to the name of the huwband, usually with a date of death at which she took over. But in this case it looks like the register was set up for the widow from the start. This also means that Hendrik Christoffel must have died before the date of 3 December 1816, but not much before the birth of their last daughter Hendrina Christina on 17 July 1812.

We see 17 slaves registered under the name of Susanna Elizabeth, and also significant numbers of slaves registered with the children, all of them in both W-Ledgers, ie. with two copies of each Folio:

• Hendrik Christoffel, Hendrik's son, 6 slaves, Folio W-9 ^[6]
• Pieter Daniel, Hendrik's son, 8 slaves, Folio W-14^[7]
• Daniel Jacobus, Hendrik's son, 14 slaves in Folio W-18^[8]
• Jacobus Stephanus, Hendrik's son, 3 slaves in Folio W-19^[9]
• Johannes Francois, minor, guardian Susanna Elisabeth de Wet, 2 slaves, Folio W-62^[10]
• Hendrina Christina, minor, Pieter Daniel guardian, 1 slave, Folio W-70^[11]

All together, the widow and her children registered 51 slaves, though not all directly from the start of the register in 1816, as a significant fraction was born from a slave mother in the period of 1816-1834.
