Summary of the Will of Sir Lionell Duckett 1588.[8]
His will addresses him as “Sir Lionell Duckett knighte Alderman of the cittie of London and late maior of the same”[9].
His lands etc he willed to Jane his wife and to his son and only child Thomas Duckett.
His goods and chattels etc were divided into three equal parts in accordance with the Custom of the City of London, one part to his wife, one to his son, and the third for his other legacies and bequests.
Of the third part he made a number of charitable bequests including “to the company of Mercers whereof I am free”; to the poor of the parishes of St Lawrence Old Jurye, St Mary Magdalene Milk Street and St Peter “in Cheape wheare I now dwell”; to the poor of Flintham, ?Rinton, Sibthorpe and Syerston in Nottinghamshire.
To his nephew Stephen Duckett he bequathed £100 and to “Lionell Duckett his sonne my godsonne twentie poundes if he lyve to the age of twentie and one yeares and if he die to John Duckett his brother I give the same somme”.
To Allen Duckett his servant and kinsman he beqeathed £20.
The residue he bequeathed to his wife and son to be equally divided between them excepting that his wife was to have the house in London where he then dwelt.
He named his wife Dame Jane his Executrix and his Overseers were his good friend Mr Thomas Owen gent and his nephew Stephen Duckett gent.
In the Codicil he stated “Now for that my sonne Thomas hathe married one Margarett Nelson without my consent and expresse comanndment” and also that he had sold his house in London. He ensured his wife was provided for by granting her his manor and farm of Barcott [Barcote] in Berkshire for her life. After her death they were to pass to his son Thomas Duckett, and if Thomas were to die without issue then to the Testator’s nephew Stephen Duckett.
Lionel was succeeded by his nephew Stephen (d. 1591), son of John Duckett of Flintham, co. Notts. Stephen served as MP for Calne in 1584 and 1586.[2]
A portraiture of Lionel by Hans Holbein in the possession of Sir George Duckett, Bt., shows him in his robes of Lord Mayor of London, with a ring on his finger, quartering the arms of Duckett, Redman, Alborough, and Windesore.[10]
Lyonel partnered with Sir Thomas Gresham, in the building of the Royal Exchange,[10] and was a man of such considerable property, that he is reported to have given the sum of 8000 marks to each of his three daughters; an enormous sum in those days, but deemed so inferior to what his known riches could have intitled him to have given, that he is said to have answered to some one, who questioned him upon it, that it was not becoming in him to give more, since Queen Elizabeth only received 10000.[10]
