Queen Victoria's Decree Normally, when a male heir dies, leaving no other male heir, the dukedom and marquessate of Fife would head into extinction since only a male heir could inherit those titles. However, on 24 April 1900 Queen Victoria granted Alexander William George Duff a second dukedom of Fife, along with the earldom of Macduff, stipulating by special remainder that these two titles would jointly devolve upon their daughters in order of seniority of birth, (in default of sons born to him and the Queen's granddaughter, Princess Louise Sachsen-Coburg und Gotha) and upon their respective agnatic (related to the Father's side) male descendants in the same order. So, after his death in 1912, Lady Alexandra eventually inherited the Dukedom of Fife.( 2nd creation).
