Biography

Notables Project
Norwich Duff is Notable.

Norwich Duff , the son of Captain George Duff RN and his wife, Sophia Dirom, was born in Edinburgh on the 15th of August 1792 and was baptised at St Cuthbert on the 20th. [1]

Trafalgar. N Pocock

In 1805, aged 13, he was serving as a volunteer in the Royal Navy aboard his father's ship, HMS Mars. Nelson's famous signal to the fleet was run up at 11.45 am. Mars took a great deal of punishment and at 1.15 Norwich's father was killed, virtually cut in two, having taken a cannonball in the chest. For three hours the captain's mangled body lay on the deck covered with the Union flag. The first Lieutenant, William Hennah, took over as Captain and it was he who received Villeneuve's sword when the latter came aboard to surrender. [2]

Norwich continued with his Naval Career and married Helena Mary Shoolbred, daughter of John Shoolbred and his wife, Lucy Rand, at St Swithin, Walcot on the 10th of June 1833. [3]

Norwich was promoted Vice Admiral on the 28h of November 1857.

10 Marlborough Buildings

He died at his home, 10 Marlborough Buildings, Walcot, Bath on the 21st of April 1862, leaving an estate valued at less than £40,000. [4] His death was registered at Bath. [5]

Admiral Norwich Duff was buried in Bath Abbey on the 25th of April. [6] His modest memorial is immediately above the lengthy one to Admiral William Hargood, captain of the Belleisle at the Battle of Trafalgar.
