James was head of Fettes College, Edinburgh, in 1877-1878.
He gained a scholarship at Trinity College, Cambridge, and in 1879
a Foundation Scholarship at the same College. He took a first in the
Classical Tripos in 1882, and was elected a Fellow of the College in 1883.[2]
He specialised in Latin and Russian: editing editions of Juvenal, Lucretius and Pliny; translating Lucan and Silius Italicus from the Latin, and works by Sergey Aksakoff from the Russian.
