Biography

James Duff Dunlop was born in 1860, the son of James Duff and Jane Bracken (Dunlop) Duff.[1] He was the twin of Alan Colquhoun Duff.

James was head of Fettes College, Edinburgh, in 1877-1878.

He gained a scholarship at Trinity College, Cambridge, and in 1879 a Foundation Scholarship at the same College. He took a first in the Classical Tripos in 1882, and was elected a Fellow of the College in 1883.[2]

He specialised in Latin and Russian: editing editions of Juvenal, Lucretius and Pliny; translating Lucan and Silius Italicus from the Latin, and works by Sergey Aksakoff from the Russian.

He married Laura Eleanor Lenox-Conyngham on 28 December 1895. They had five children:

  1. Lieutenant-General Alan Colquhoun Duff (1896[3]-1973[4]) who published books under the nom-de-plume "Hugh Imber";
  2. Sir James Fitzjames Duff (1898[5] - );
  3. Patrick William Duff (1901[6]-1991[7]), Regius Professor of Civil Law at Trinity College, Cambridge;
  4. Mary Geraldine Duff (1904[8]-1995[9]), principal at Norwich Training College, Norwich;
  5. Hester Laura Elisabeth Duff (1912[10]-2001).

James passed away in Cambridge in 1940.[11][12]
