Biography

Duncan II MacDuff is a member of Clan MacDuff.

Duncan II was an Earl of Fife, and Justiciar of Scotland. He succeeded his father Duncan I in 1154. His own son Malcolm succeeded him 1204. The Complete Peerage says he died in 1203, "after July".

Both the Scots Peerage and the Complete Peerage count Duncan II as the 5th Earl of Fife, but he was the 3rd Earl in the line of inheritance starting with his grandfather Gillemichael MacDuff. The connection, if any, with the earlier earl, Constantine, is unclear. Before Constantine, things are even less clear, but it appears there was at least one more earl.

The Scots Peerage by Balfour Paul lists 4 children for Duncan II. Hodgson believed they were all children of his first wife, Ela or Ada, who was a niece of King Malcolm IV.

  1. Malcolm, in 1204 succeeded his father as earl of Fife, died 1228, married Matilda, the daughter of Gilbert, earl of Stratherne, who granted in frank marriage to Malcolm, son of Earl Duncan of Fife, with his daughter Maud, Glendevon, Carnbo, Aldie, Fossoway, Dalkeith and (?) Pitfar (1194-8);
  2. Duncan, married Alice Corbet, the daughter of Walter Corbet of Makerstoun;
  3. David, who received the lands of Strathbogie, Aberdeenshire, from his father;
  4. A daughter. Hodgson calls her Ada. Duncan gave 500 marks to the King of England, in 1188, for the custody of Roger de Merlay's land in Northumberland, the ward of Roger's son and leave for the son to marry his daughter.

Sorry about this, Allan. I should have been more specific. The sons of both profiles, Strathbogie-14 and Duff-1356 are in a pending merge. They both have a son called John married to the same woman, Ada Hastings, with a merge ready to be completed (default approval). Perhaps it would be a good idea to turn it to a simple match until this is sorted out. Thanks for your attention to this problem.
Strathbogie-15 and MacDuff-31 are not ready to be merged because: Insufficient information on both Profiles to determine a match.

Names & D.O.B. are different.
