  • Information on John Duff's marriage to Margaret Gordon was presumably originally taken, directly or indirectly, from "The Book of the Duffs" by Henrietta and Alexander (Alister) Tayler, printed privately by T & A Constable in Edinburgh 1914, and made available (partially) online by the Internet Archive "Wayback Machine" in 2009. The Taylers based themselves on family sources and original baptismal records. Information of the marriage has again been agreed to a photocopy taken from a Register of Proclamations of Banns of Marriages for the Parish of Cullen in the County of Banff ("Extract of entries in an Lld Parochial Register"). The date of the original reegister entry is given as 12 October 1718 (though the completed page includes entries covering various dates in October and November 1718). The photocopy is given under the Seal of the General Register Office in Edinburgh on 14 August 2000. A selective entry from the text reads:
* "September 25th...
John Duff, merchant in Elgin contracted marriage with Miss(?) Margaret Gordon, lawful daughter to William Gordon of Forskan were proclaimed both here & in the Church of Elgin three sett(?) times & married October 12th".
* As a consequence both of the uneven quality of the copy and the transcriber's unfamiliarity with abbreviations and of the style of the nandwriting, it has been necessary, in places, to draw certain inferences in respect of what was actually written,

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:
