Biography

Joseph Broussard is on the Wall of Names at the Acadian Memorial in St. Martinville, Louisiana Plaque 2 Right. Listed with him is his wife Marguerite Savoie and two children: Rene and Marguerite. [1]

Marguerite Savoie was born about 1736 in Acadia. Her parents are Jean Dit Djanne SAVOIE and Anne LANDRY but please see Marguerite Savoie's Parents for more details and also see the research section below. She was living in the Attakapas Territory during the censuses of 1769, 1774 and 1777.

We know of her marriage to Joseph BROUSSARD dit Petit Jo, son of Joseph BROUSSARD dit Beausoleil & Agnes THIBODEAUX, because of a daughter's marriage contract, census records and succession entries.[2] Marguerite Savoie and Joseph Broussard were first cousins once removed. Marguerite Savoie (abt.1736-1816) and Joseph Broussard (abt.1726-1788) are both descendants of Catherine Richard. We know of no dispensation to marry obtained. Given the times of the great upheaval, dispensations to marry weren't always readily available, but were often granted since dire circumstances demanded such.

Census: 1769: Attakapas Post in 1769[3]

Census: 1774: Attakapas in 1774 [4]

Census: 1777: Attakapas in 1777. Joseph, Marguerite, 2 sons, 3 daughters, 3 slaves. There were 100 cattle, 20 horses, and 20 hogs.[5]

Marguerite died suddenly at age about 77 years at the home of Michel BROUSSARD her son-in-law at La Cote Gelee on 19 Oct 1816 in St. Martin, LA., and was buried the next day at the St. Martinville Church cemetery. Her estate was probated on 16 Feb 1817 St. Martinville, St. Martin Parish.[6]

Research

Parents:

Please be aware: The parents were recently changed to Jean Savoie (1710-bef. 1791) & Anne Landry (1718-bef. 1803). This Marguerite Savoie's parents were originally thought to be Francoise Martin and Charles Savoie. However, DNA research from descendants of Marguerite Savoie and Petit Jos Broussard, through their daughter Louise (Ludivine), didn't support that conclusion. Further research by Stephen White, and reported in a letter to Donald J. Arceneaux, found one woman named Marguerite Savoie who could have married Joseph dit Petit Jos Broussard. See Marguerite Savoie's Parents for more details and copied material from the letters. [7]

I went ahead and made the changes to both profiles. I added the correct parents for Marguerite Savoie wife of Joseph Broussard. Then I added Marguerite Savoie to Charles Savoie and Francoise Martin.

Hi Audrey, thanks for your note about Marguerite's parents. Thanks for helping make WT the best free website for accurate genealogy. One caveat: I see that you notified profile managers and projects a couple of days ago and then made the changes the following day. Given that changing parents can be controversial and quite upsetting to some descendants, it would be good to give at least a week's notice before going ahead with the changes in case there are objections. In this case, you have properly shown the source for the changes and I applaud you for that. I post this here so that others may also be aware of how to proceed before changing parents on one of our VIP profiles and not to cast any doubt on anything.

DNA Results

Sources: Letter - From Stephen White to Donald J. Arceneaux [email address removed] , dated 29 Mar 2015. Scanned copy on Broussard family page at CAFA: http://www.cafa.org/Stephen%20White%20Letter.html - Marguerite SAVOIE, daughter of Charles SAVOIE & Françoise MARTIN did not have the "right" mitochondrial DNA to be the wife of Petit Jos BROUSSARD. "We now know this thanks to a lady named Elizabeth Eudy who lives in Moss Point, Mississippi." Her mother was a Comeaux from Lake Charles, and descends in her direct maternal line from Marguerite Savoie and Petit Jos Broussard, through their daughter Louise (Ludivine), who was born about 1767. "Mrs. Eudy had her mtDNA tested by Family Tree DNA and joined the Mothers of Acadia Project. Her test results came back showing the very distinctive genetic signature of Radegonde Lambert. Françoise Martin was meanwhile a great-great-granddaughter in her maternal line of Françoise Corbineau and Guillaume Trahan. Françoise's mtDNA was thus entirely different from what Mrs. Eudy's ancestor Marguerite Savoie carried, and so her daughter Marguerite cannot have been the same Marguerite Savoie who married Petit Jos Broussard. I went through the Savoie families of the appropriate time period, and it turns out that there is only one who carried the 'right' mtDNA. This is the family of Jean dit Djanne Savoie and Anne Landry. Anne was a daughter of Charles Landry and Catherine-Josephe Broussard, whose mother Catherine Richard was a daughter of Madeleine Blanchard, whose mother was Radegonde Lambert. And Mrs. Eudy's test results prove that her maternal line must connect to them. Without the mtDNA test, I do not see how we would ever have guessed that Marguerite Savoie was herself descended from the Broussards, as her connection with them makes her a first cousin once removed to her husband. Such close marriages did take place, especially amonng the small groups of Acadians after their initial scattering in the aftermath of 1755. But intermarriage as close as that was generally discouraged, so it normally requires some additional evidence to show that a couple were in fact so closely related. There was no such additional evidence before Mrs. Eudy's test.
