Biography

Marguerite Dugas was born in 1681. She was the daughter of Claude Dugas and Françoise Bourgeois. She was baptized at Beaubassin on March 19, 1681. The date of her birth was not mentioned in the register. Her godparents were sieur Alexandre LeNeuf sr du Beaubasssin and Marguerite Bourgeois who named her Marguerite.[1][2]

In 1686, at Port Royal, Marguerite, aged 5, was living with her parents, Claude DUGAS, aged 38, and Francoise BOURGEOIS, aged 25, and seven siblings: Marie, aged 12, Claude, aged 10, Anne, aged 7, Francoise, aged 6, Joseph, aged 6, Jeanne, aged 3, and Agnesse [sic], aged 1. They owned 1 gun and were living on 8 arpents of cultivable land with 25 cattle, 9 sheep, and 11 hogs.[3]

In 1693, at Port Royal, Marguerite, aged 11, was living with her parents, Claude, aged 44, and Francoise BOURGEOIS, aged 34, and her ten siblings: Marie, aged 17, Claude, aged 16, Francoise, aged 14, Joseph, aged 13, Anne, aged 10, Jeanne, aged 9, Agnes, aged 7, Francois, aged 5, Madeleine, aged 4, and Cecile, aged 1. She was living in the household of her grandparents, Abraham DUGAS, aged 74, and Marguerite DOUCET, aged 66. The family owned 4 guns and was living on 26 arpents of cultivable land with 20 cattle, 30 sheep, and 15 pigs.[4]

She married Jean Melanson in 1701 in Acadia.[5] They had 12 children:

She passed away, most probably at Grand Pré, between July 1724 (Baptism of her son Étienne[6]) and February 1729 (Marriage of her son jean Baptiste[7]).

Marie Dugas, born about 1691, would have been 2 years old in 1693, but she was missing from the 1693 census. Another Marie was listed, Marie “Catherine” Dugas, but she was born in 1674.
