Biography

Claude Dugas, son of Abraham Dugas (abt.1616-bef.1700) and Marguerite Doucet (abt.1625-1707), was born about 1649 in Port-Royal, Acadie.[1]

He married twice. The first marriage was to Françoise Bourgeois (abt.1659-abt.1697), daughter of Jacques Bourgeois and Jeanne Trahan, at Port-Royal around 1673. Claude was about 24 years of age at the time, and Françoise about 14. They had 12 children between about 1674 and 1692, including three sons who married into the Bourg family, all daughters of Bernard Bourg.[1]

In March 1682, the seigneur of Beaubassin Michel Le Neuf de La Vallière sent summons to eleven inhabitants of Beaubassin to appear before the Sovereign Council of Quebec for having refused to accept concession contracts. These inhabitants were: Pierre Morin, Guyon Chiasson, Michel Poirier, Roger Kessy, Claude Dugas, Germain et Guillaume Bourgeois. Germain Girouard, Jean-Aubin Migneaux, Jacques Belou and Thomas Cormier. [2] However, his attempt to impose seigneurial dues such as the corvée (obligatory labour) was soon contested by the settlers who won their case in court. [3][4]

In 1686, Claude DUGAS, appeared twice in the census.[5]

First, in 1686, at Port Royal, Claude DUGAS, aged 38, was living with his wife, Francoise BOURGEOIS, aged 25, and their eight children: Marie, aged 12, Claude, aged 10 [sic], Anne, aged 7, Francoise, aged 6 [sic], Joseph, aged 6, Marguerite, aged 5, Jeanne, aged 3, and Agnesse [sic], aged 1. They owned 1 gun and were living on 8 arpents of cultivable land with 25 cattle, 9 sheep, and 5 hogs.

Second, in 1686, at Chiqnitou dit Beaubassin, Claude DUGAS was the owner of 30 arpents of cultivable land with 8 cattle.

In 1693, at Port Royal, Claude, aged 44, was living with his wife, Francoise BOURGEOIS, aged 34, and their 11 children: Marie, aged 17, Claude, aged 16, Francoise, aged 14, Joseph, aged 13, Marguerite, aged 11, Anne, aged 10, Jeanne, aged 9, Agnes, aged 7, Francois, aged 5, Madeleine, aged 4, and Cecile, aged 1. He was living in the household of his parents, Abraham DUGAS, aged 74, and Marguerite DOUCET, aged 66. The family owned 4 guns and was living on 26 arpents of cultivable land with 20 cattle, 30 sheep, and 15 pigs.[6]

In 1695, Claude had to swear an oath of allegiance to the King of England, who then controlled Nova Scotia and most of Acadie.[1]

When Françoise died, Claude remarried to Marguerite, another daughter of Bernard Bourg, around 1697. They had 10 children between 1698 and 1715 approximately.[1]

He was in the Acadian censuses of 1698[7]and 1700.[8]

He was an armorer like his father, as noted in his daughter Marguerite’s marriage contract in 1701[9] and the Port-Royal census of that same year.[10] The 1703 census shows that there were 2 sons, 7 daughters and 1 arms bearer in the family home. [11]

The Acadian censuses of 1707[12], 1710 [13] and 1714 [14] also show the Dugas family living in Port-Royal, and twice listed in Abraham Dugas' household. "The house of Claude DUGAS is shown on the map of the 1707 census, on the same side of the Rivière au Dauphin as Port Royal, but to the southwest, nearer the Isle aux Chèvres."[15]

In 1714, they lived on the south bank of the Dauphin river, outside of Port-Royal.[16]

He died in October 1732 in Annapolis Royal (formerly Port-Royal) at the age of 86, according to the burial record, and was interred on 16 October 1732.[17][18][19]

Research Notes

Summary of a letter dated 1705 that appears to condemn Claude Dugas for something, and mentions that he has lived on his property for 60 years. [20]
