Biography

Research Notes

The parents originally attached could have had a child in this timeframe, but did not have one named Alphonse. They did have a son named Athanase Dugas (1751-1791) who was born in Ekoupag, Riviere St. Jean. Should they be merged?(Bourque-573 19:04, 16 March 2021 (UTC))

Neither Karen Theriot Reader nor Marcel Landry has any Alphonse Dugas born in the 1600-1700's.

In Bona's book vol 2 (Port-Royal) Jean Dugas is mentioned, but children are not named. p. 530 https://archive.org/details/isbn_0776150278/page/530/mode/2up

In vol 6 (Louisiana) Jean Dugas and his family appear on page 2474 according to Karen Theriot. Unfortunately, it is not available in archive.org. In Google Books, a search for Alphonse gives 0 results. https://books.google.ca/books?redir_esc=y&id=fZ0aAAAAYAAJ&focus=searchwithinvolume&q=

Couldn't find anything in Fonds Placide Gaudet, or in Ancestry. (above from Gisele Cormier by email Feb 21, 2024 to Cindy Cooper)

Who was in Halifax with the father?

  1. Jean the father was at Halifax in 1763 with 10 in the family. (eight would have been children.)
  2. Marie Charlotte, the wife
  3. not Joseph the oldest who was married with 3 children by then
  4. probably not Madeleine who married in Halifax in 1759
  5. Marie who married the year after
  6. probably not Anastasie who married in 1758
  7. Francoise who was on WON with the other children
  8. Unsure about Jean, not on WON but was living during this time b/c he got to Louisiana, he would have been 14
  9. Rose who was on WON with other children
  10. Charles on WON
  11. Athanase on WON b 1751
  12. Michel on WON b 1752
  13. Theodore on WON b 1758

Alphonse would be 11th if all the others are correct which is too many for the family count in 1763. Being only 10, he should have been with the family at that time. If he hadn't died he would have also been on the WON.

This source was on the profile: "Bona Arsenault, Histoire et Genealogie des Acadiens, 1671, 1648. " NOTE a review of this source: Arsenault, Bona. Histoire et généalogie des Acadiens, Leméac , 1978, shows no entry for Alphonse, Athanase, or Jeans' wife. There are two entries about Jean and his arrival in Louisiana. Nothing listing his family.

Removed birth year and location as both are unsourced. WikiTree requires a date so the parents marriage year 1735 is a placeholder until more is documented about this child.(Bourque-573 14:39, 4 March 2024 (UTC))

It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Alphonse by comparing test results with other carriers of his ancestors' Y-chromosome or mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Alphonse:

Dugas-74 and Dugas-76 do not represent the same person because: There is discussion of a source for Alphonse. Please add it to the profile to prevent further confusion. Rejecting the merge on the basis of the comments, but more is needed.

Dugas-74 and Dugas-76 appear to represent the same person because: Agreed duplicate.
Dugas-74 and Dugas-76 do not represent the same person because: I think that Athanase & Alphonse were brothers, born about 2 or 3 years apart to the same parents. One source is Bona Arsenault, Histoire et Genealogie des Acadiens, 1671, 1648.

OK that seems possible. None of the sources I consulted had this brother but I'm glad you have a source! Shall we give this one the same parents? I could use the source you provided, or you are welcome to do it, either way.

Dugas-74 and Dugas-76 appear to represent the same person because: Name is close, birth date close, same location. The parents what were originally on Dugas 76 are the same parets for Dugas 74. those parents did not have a child name Alphonse. No other Alphone Dugas people found i Acadie at all until well into the 1800's. He should be merged away into the correct profile.
