Biography

JOSEPH DUGAS is on the Wall of Names at the Acadian Memorial in St. Martinville, Louisiana, on Plaque 3-Left. He is listed alone.[1]

Joseph was born 1680 to Claude Dugas and Françoise Bourgeois.

In 1686, at Port Royal, Joseph, aged 6, was living with his parents, Claude Dugas, aged 38, and Francoise BOURGEOIS, aged 25, and seven siblings: Marie, aged 12, Claude, aged 10, Anne, aged 7, Francoise, aged 6, Marguerite, aged 5, Jeanne, aged 3, and Agnesse [sic], aged 1. They owned 1 gun and were living on 9 arpents of cultivable land with 25 cattle, 9 sheep, and 11 hogs.[2]

In 1693, at Port Royal, Joseph, aged 13, was living with his parents, Claude, aged 44, and Francoise BOURGEOIS, aged 34, and his ten siblings: Marie, aged 17, Claude, aged 16, Francoise, aged 14, Marguerite, aged 11, Anne, aged 10, Jeanne, aged 9, Agnes, aged 7, Francois, aged 5, Madeleine, aged 4, and Cecile, aged 1. He was living in the household of his grandparents, Abraham DUGAS, aged 74, and Marguerite DOUCET, aged 66. The family owned 4 guns and was living on 26 arpents of cultivable land with 20 cattle, 30 sheep, and 15 pigs.[3]

In 1699, he married Claire Bourg in Port Royal.

1707 Cobequid Census: Joseph DUGAST, Clair BOURG, 1 boy less than 14, 2 girls less than 12; 6 arpents, 15 cattle, 6 sheep, 8 hogs.

1714 Cobequid Census: Joseph DUGAS and his wife, 4 sons, 3 daughters.

He died in 1765 at age 85, buried in St. Martinville, soon after his arrival in Louisiana.[4]

Two brothers, Francois and Joseph Dugas, married two sisters, Claire b. 1682 and Claire b. 1692 Bourg.

Recorded by Fr. Jean FRANCOIS at St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church, St. Martinville, LA (SM Ch.: v.1, p.8) & (SM Ch.: Slave Funeral Register, v.1, #8). [One of the first burials recorded in this parish.] Also: Joseph DUGAS buried 6/11 Oct 1765, recorded -- Oct 1765 by Fr. Jean FRANCOIS "cure de la nouvelle Acadie." (SM Ch.: v.1, p.13) & (SM Ch.: Slave Funderal Register, v.1, #22).

Two families have children mixed up:

Francois Dugas married to Claire Bourg (b 1692) and Joseph Dugas married to Claire Bourg (b 1682) These were brothers married to two sisters named Claire, born 10 years apart. Many children of the two families had the same names as well. I'm going to untangle the cousins using Karen Theriot Readers lists. Cindy

Actually looks like only one child was in wrong family. There was one missing from Josephs fam so I added him and two spouses.

This child is Jean Baptiste Dugas...I find him with 2 two extra spouses- I only have him as spouse to Anne Bourque Dugas-36
