Biography

Flag of Virginia
William Duke Sr migrated from Virginia to North Carolina.
Flag of North Carolina
William Duke Sr was part of a Southern Pioneer Family.

William Duke Sr. was born in 1701 in Isle of Wight County, Virginia Colony. Thamar Taylor and William Duke Sr. were married in Aug 1717 in Isle of Wight, Surry County, North Carolina. The biggest error made by researchers regarding our early colonial family history is that many believe that the parents of William Duke Sr. are James Duke and Mary Duke. This is incorrect. The father of our William Duke Sr. is John Duke Jr. and his grandfather is John Duke Sr. This unquestionably has been proven with DNA testing.

Thamar Taylor was born in 1703 in Virginia, United States. She died before Aug 1737 at the age of 34 in Brunswick, Virginia. It is rumored that Thamar was a Saponi Indian who was adopted by the Taylor family. However, there is no written proof, to date, of this. William and Thamar had 3 children. Thamar died very young before 1737. A local widow, Elizabeth Bartholomew, helped William take care of his children after Thamar’s death. William eventually married Elizabeth.

William Duke Sr. and Thamar Taylor had the following children:

1. William Norman Duke Jr. was born in 1721 in Isle of Wight, Virginia. He died after 26 Oct 1793 at the age of 72 in Warren County, North Carolina. No proven middle name for William; not Norman & not Raleigh.

2. John Duke Sr. was born 1724, Virginia and died 1755, Granville County, North Carolina.

3. Thamar Duke was born in 1728 in Brunswick, Virginia. She died in 1771 at the age of 43 in North Carolina. John Taylor Duke is my direct line ancestor.

Research Notes

This individual, William Duke, has been proven through yDNA study at ftDNA to be part of group 2, aka, Isle of Wight Co VA Duke Family, not the Henrico Co VA Duke Family as previous published documents showed. As of 08/19/2020, the earliest known Isle of Wight Co VA ancestor established is John Duke Sr.. Revisions, modifications and adjustments are being made to all associated profiles as part of both ftDNA study, as well as GEDmatch Duke DNA study Amy Hargis 08/19/2020.

Previously incorrect information: - William Duke, did NOT have middle name of Raleigh. - The information that this William Duke was the son of James Duke and Mary Byrd was probably obtained from the Evelyn Brandenburger history of the Duke family http://www.charlemagne.org/dukes.pdf, but it is unquestionably incorrect. - Place & date of death previously listed incorrect: 28 Apr 1775 & New Bern, NC; corrected date After 1791 & place is Warren County, NC; proven by 15 Dec 1791 Land Grant for 300 acres in Warren County, NC. See Land Grant information below.

FYI - I've cleared two of the three suggestions, changing this profile's relationship with his parents to "Confident" (from "Confirmed with DNA").

Hi Les,

I am the lead researcher for this group of Dukes whom are group 2, aka, Isle of Wight Co VA Duke Family in the yDNA study at ftDNA as well as the GEDmatch Duke DNA study.

Please add me as a PM for profile Duke-388 since he is part of these two DNA studies. I am a direct descendent of his.

My email is [email address removed] Please let me know if you have any questions or if you are connected via DNA, we welcome you to join the GEDmatch Duke DNA Study that's been underway for almost 5 years with about 250 descendants participating. We have spent considerable effort to well source ancestors of these descendants by sharing their sources and providing their DNA test results. We have spent considerable effort to well source ancestors of the descendants.

Many thanks! Amy (Hargis) Blythe, Hargis-1027

Hi Tommy,

I'm the lead Researcher for the Duke Study (or group 2 in ftDNA Duke Study). We have worked long & hard on separating out truth & fiction with the various William Dukes & their locations.

DNA proves William Duke Sr (Duke-388) is part of group 2, as shown in my example below that is posted on each group 2 descendent:

"This individual, William Duke, has been proven through yDNA study at ftDNA to be part of group 2, aka, Isle of Wight Co VA Duke Family, not the Henrico Co VA Duke Family as previous published documents showed. Please either remove Duke-5467 or make it match Duke-388 so it can be merged.

If you are researching this line or are related to these Dukes, please reach out to me directly. I am more than happy to help clear up or add to your information.

Thanks, Amy

Hi Amy! I'm not very savvy when it comes to DNA. Could you add DNA information to this profile & his parents (and others that are still marked "Confirmed with DNA") that provide the information supporting that status?

Thanks!

Duke-5467 and Duke-388 appear to represent the same person because: Duke-5467 is an inaccurate duplicate of William Duke listed as Duke-388. Duke-388 is fully documented. Duke-5467 was imported as an unsourced compilation of inaccurate information. The Duke study group would like to see Duke-5467 eradicated in favor of Duke-388.

This William Duke had only two sons and one daughter, William, John and Thamar. EDB believed that Joseph and Samuel were also sons of William, but they were nephews, sons of his brother Robert Dukes of Northampton County NC. Descendants of these children have been well traced. This William Duke was one of the sons of John Duke (Bridget) II who died in IOW County VA in 1719/20.

Judy, if you can provide me with the profile ID of the correct father for Joseph and Samuel, I will move them.

Thank you Jillaine! These were moved to their correct father about a month ago. They are sons of Robert Sr, William Sr's brother.

The information that this William Duke is the son of James Duke and Mary Byrd was probably obtained from the Brandenburger history of the Duke family, but it is unquestionably incorrect. This William Duke was from the Isle of Wight Co VA Duke family. He was the brother of the adjacent John Duke in Granville Co, NC. This has been verified by MANY yDNA tests. See the Duke(s) study at Family Tree DNA.
