Biography

U.S. Southern Colonies Project logo
Thaddeus Dulin was a Virginia colonist.

His birth on 7 May 1735. His Death on 21 Dec. 1821 See Highligh area below.

The Thaddeus and Elizabeth (Powell) Dulin Family information regarding children came from the Dulin Family Bible and Thaddeus Dulin Will. In the same district of Loudoun County, Va. (see notes: William Jeans). Thaddeus Dulin also appears for the years 1784-1798 and is "gone" after 1798. . (See Dulin family Bible; DAR Lineage#103296; Montgomery County, KY Deed Book 14, p. 431; Thaddeus Dulin Will, Fayette Couty, KY. Will Book C,p.365) Winifred Dulin is listed as the daughter of Thaddeus and Elizabeth Dulin in Deed Book K (1774-1775), page 311, Loudon County, Va.The Dulin line has been traced back to Fairfax County, VA. In Truro Parish where both William and Ed Doolin are listed in the Fairfax Tithables of 1749. Rev. Charles Green, Rector of Truro Parish, noted that the family were fromerly "Papist," which means that they were at one time Catholic and probably came from Maryland. (Virginia Miscellaneous Records (Reel#19)).Thaddeus Dulin was the son of John Dulin of Fairfax County, Va.(Fairfax County, VA. Will Book F, No.1 (1791-1794), p.39-41). John Dulin was the son of William and Elizabeth Dulin of Truro Parish, Fairfax County, Va. (Fairfax County, VA. Will Book B, No. 1 (1752-1767), p. 149-51).Thaddeus Dulin married an Elizabeth Powell and there has arisen some question about the parents of this Elizabeth. The DAR Linage records accepted from Emma (Jeans) Miller #103296 state that Thaddeus Dulin married Elizabeth, the daughter of Benjamin and Mary (Bacon) Powell, that she was born 7 May1738, married on 1 June 1759 and died on 3 June 1782. Additionally, Thaddeus Dulin's death is given as 21 Dec. 1821 with his birth on 7 May 1735. The LDS record furnished by Mrs. Walter I Burleson and Emily (Dulin) Leonard including records from the Dulin family Bible owned by Mrs. Horace Dulin of Washington, D.C. state that the wife of Thaddeus was the daughter of Joseph and Sarah (Overhall)Powell. She was, according to these records, born in 1750. It should be noted that Joseph and Sarah's marriage is listed in the St. Paul's Parish Records, Fairfax County, VA. as 21 September 1750. This LDS record additionally states that Thaddeus was born in 1749, married in 1769 and died in December 1814 in Fayette County, KY. His wife is reported as having died in Fayette County, KY. in December 1829. A very definitve study of Thaddeus and Dulin line has been made by Roberta (Dulin) Stewart in her book The Dulin Family in America, published in 1961. On pages 145-6 she discusses the question of the wife of Thaddeus and dates of marriages and death, etc. She suggests that Thaddeus was born in 1749 because of a deed made by John Dulin (his father) in 1753 and marked in the margin: "Delivered to T. Dulin Mar. 30, 1770." Mrs. Stewart thinks this indicates that Thaddeus took over the lease at about age 21 and at the time of his marriage. Additionally, the birth dates of Thaddeus' children beginning in 1771 further indicate that he did not mary Elizabeth until 1769. Joseph Powell's will probated in Fairfax County, VA. in 1803 names a daughter, Elizabeth Dulin. (Will Book I #1, p. 217). Thaddeus and wife, Elizabeth, are mentioned in Loudon County, VA. Deed Book Y (1797-1798) p.141 and two of his daughters, Frances and Winfred, are named in Loudoun County, VA. Deed Book K (1774-1775)p.311.

According to family records of Ernest McCabe, Thaddeus Dulin was a preaching elder of the Baptist Church and came to Kentucky to spread the gospel. The Dulin family Bible says he was a planter and tanner. He did own considerable land in Loudoun County, VA. and in both Montgomery and Fayette Counties, KY. and he is recorded as a clerk of the Old Boone's Creek Baptist Church in July, 1813, resigning in October 1814. (Conwright, History of Churches, Boone's Creek, KY. p.45-6). Mrs. Stewart's book does not mention that he bought land in Montgomery County, KY., but the deeds there indicate that he pruchased land before 1803 consisting of 185 acres on the Grassy Lick Creek. (Deed Book 2, p.463 & Deed Book 14, p.197 of Montgomery County, KY.) This land later became the property of William Jeans III through his wife, Winifred (Dulin) Jeans. [1]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Thaddeus by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Thaddeus:

If Thaddeius was b. ca 1750 and James (supposedly his son per Roberta Stewarts undocumented book) was born ca 1755, I think you have a problem here.

Roberta Stewart's book has little to know sources. She made other errors on this line. PLEASE use better sources. NOTE: There is no son named James here. People put in a comma after Winefred to make it so. See the original:

If Thaddeus was born ca 1740 and James whom you claim is his son, was born ca 1755, I am doubting this for sure! Where's the proof, please.
