Thomas Clement Dunbar was born on 6 September 1825 at Cape Province, South Africa. He was the son of James Dunbar and Anna Catharina van Reede d'Oudtshoorn. He died on 16 March 1896 at age 70 at Holborn, London.
He gained the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the 75th Regiment
He married Caroline Adriana Matthews, daughter of Albert Matthews, on 24 July 1849, at Dinapore, Bengal, India. They were divorced in 1875.
